Great deals on CRKT!

AUS-118 was at one time CRKT's premium knife steel that was said to be comparable to ATS-34 .(I believe they now use AUS-8 on their best knives)

I bought a CRKT Wasp a couple of years ago and it's been a great knife. It has an excellent fit & finish, titanium frame, and cool looking blue and black G-10 scales. The knife takes a very sharp edge and holds it quite well. The styling is a little unconventional but if you like the looks of this knife 27.99 is an absolute steal.(The Wasp is priced at over 70 dollars at both of my favorite online blade stores, knifeworks.com & New Graham )

They use 154CM in their new American-made assisted openers, the Voodoo and the Wild Weasel.

So its a fairly good blade i see.

Worthy of picking up at the advertised price.

Thannks for info on the steel guys, apreciate it.

Are those prices for real? Seem pretty low.

he could just be selling at wholesale to unload some unpopular knives. the models listed arent their best-selling knives at all, in fact i constantly see them on sale everywhere. if you look, the best-selling CRKTs (M16/M21 line) are actually significantly above the average street price.
he also could be listing slightly below wholesale but recovering the money on shipping/handling (i havent gone through checkout so i have no idea how much this is).
or, it could simply be a bait/switch scam. never know unless you buy one. you could order a prowler, for example, and theyll contact you and tell you that unfortunately it is sold out, and upsell you to another model - no doubt one of their overpriced CRKTs.
i think im going to order a prowler and see how it goes. not exactly my first choice in a knife, but it would make a good beater or an inexpensive gift.

as for the wasp, even though the list price is over $120, and it uses pretty premium materials (titanium, G-10, aus-118, etc) i still cant bring myself to order one, even at $27.
it just looks cheap and ungainly... no wonder it has been a poor seller. i feel bad for those who spent $120+ on it and bought into all the hype.

"Viele knives are handsome knives that look so good, and so often different as well, you can't help noticing. That's practically a definition of style." At knife shows, Howard usually sells out in the first couple of hours to people who intend to carry and use his knives, which Ken Warner has called "possibly the Rolex of the cutlery world."

if the wasp represents the 'pinnacle of knife design', then i think ill give up knife-collecting entirely. what a load of horse-sh*t.
this knife is on clearance everywhere, with clearance/closeout/sale/special prices well under half the MSRP. im not suprised. its sad that a knife with an original MSRP of $120+ and made with premium materials is available for around $25, and yet i still have to sit here and mull buying it over. even worse still that i decided not to buy it altogether, even for a 'beater'.

of course this is just my opinion (but obviously others agree, or else the knife wouldnt be at 1/5-1/2 MSRP just about everywhere). if you like the design then by all means grab it, you wont get a knife made of those materials for that much anywhere - not even a used one.

moved my experience with their phone sales dept to the good/bad/ugly

I've bought some CRKTs from Smokey Mountain Knife Works a few times. Definitely not a bait & switch -- if something is out of stock, they'll ship it when it comes in. Shipping is not expensive, either.

The last time, as I recall, was a Ryan Plan B for about that price, as well as a small Crawford-Kasper folder and a Companion. All for under 60 bucks.

Part of the reason that time, I think, is they were unloading the black-blade models -- even now, if you look at the site, you'll see that the black-blade Companion is ten bucks cheaper than the plain version.

I agree that the wasp is quite ugly, but for the most part Viele does design a pretty nice knife. Look at the Viele II for Spyderco. I personally think its more of a issue with CRKT, all of there knives seem to go for more unconvential designs(excluding the M16/20 line.)

yeah, aside from the crawford designed knives i guess im not a huge fan of most of them :)

its still a great price for someone who is getting into knife collecting and wants something made from quality materials - i mean seriously, to get a titanium frame knife with G-10 scales and the equivalent of an ATS-34 blade for around $25 is pretty sweet.
