Not sure how many if you have Netflix but there is a great documentary called "secrets of the Viking sword".lots of cool info and forging.

I’ve read that early modern English monasteries could make crucible steel before Bessemer. I never got any details. This, or something like it, may have been their trick.

Then Henry VIII joined the reformation and started his own church. The monk’s secret methods were lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Oh, the ex monks might have set up as secular smiths. But Henry had an awful lot of those guys killed. Hanging the former occupants by the neck avoided escrow for the new owner.
