Great Eastern Cutlery: #66 - Equal End Serpentine

Just received DLT's SFO of the 66 in smooth autumn gold bone. I complained and moaned that the color wasn't gold enough for me. But now that I have it in hand I have to say it is a fine example of the pattern. The F&F and W&T are wonderful. There are no lazy secondary blades, the satin finished blades are real nice and I love the oak leaf shield. Can't wait for the stag and tortoise shell I have reserved.

Very nice looking knife and report Alan, glad it turned out to your liking. I have one on its way and hope it's as nice as your example.

Glad you like it buddy! It looks great to me! Love the long pull. The shape of the spey is just great too!

Thanks Mark. If you look at the spey it swoops a little like a clip yet it's about the size of a pen without the point. Overall, this one is so solid you'd think it was all steel.

My Smooth Autumn Gold has too much..............green. Almost like a nite-bright bone if there were such a thing. I don't know if it will come through in the pics but it's weird and more than a little bit off putting. I don't think I'll be holding onto this one for long. I have a Smooth Oily Creek on the way so I can carry a 66 in the pocket without having to view this autumn gold.

When GEC makes a knife and the dye color turns out different, they normally change the name. That's why I posted a question in the other thread 'what color would you call that?' - as I was expecting that to happen. But it didn't...

Now if GEC had done this and called it something like 'Smooth Toffee Apple Bone' or 'Salted Caramel Bone' I think a lot of people would be happier. As it is, GEC didn't change the name, so everyone is searching for the gold...

Glad that these came out to your liking...I know you were sweating it just a bit!

To be honest,I am quite doubtful whether GEC could dye the color "accurately".We all know the "Autumn gold" is different in each run.It seems that they just see what turn out and use them,if they are similar to yellow/gold,then it's ok.My deepest impression is CK' s SFO #77 Barlow in 2015,single blade and double blades have different "autumn gold" color apparently, while I do not believe GEC do this on purpose, maybe simply by accident?
(But the answer could also be "they wanna make each "autum gold" color be unique enough……)
Have more ideas?

^^I think your on the right track.I think predicting results with certain colors is difficult at best . I'm wondering if the hemlock was supposed to be blood red gone bad?

Got mine yesterday. Smaller blades are much lighter, but do indeed snap open and shut. No worries there. I like this knife a lot, but it may be a while before I sharpen it up and toss it in the pocket. 3 blades is a lot, so I'd have to find a night where I can OCD it up on the sharpener.

Figuring on the Ironwood is gorgeous. Glad I snagged this sample.

I think so.

I guess we will know more when we get one in hand. Looking forward to seeing all the different photos posted.

This isn't new. It happened last year with the smooth autumn gold 85s. There were some stellar pieces, and then some that people thought were bleh. I even heard one referred to as "smooth diarrhea bone".

Bone is an organic material. The part of the country the cow came from, and what it ate, and the time of year, and all these things have an effect on how the bone substrate reacts with the dye. Also, depending on the color, certain dyes might have a very narrow margin of concentration/temperature/other stuff in which they look optimal, and I doubt GEC is using super sophisticated chemical engineering.

I think it's back on the end user's expectations. As Mr. Latham (knifeswapper) muses, the knives from ____years ago would never have flown with today's customer base. The knives were designed and produced as tools, and nowadays many buyers are looking for a trophy.
