Any lovers/users of the Great Eastern Cutlery Sunfish design? (or other makers, custom or production)

I am interested in the design and wanted some feed back.

I like the fact that the handle is fat and it has a nice sized primary blade, with a little secondary blade.

Any pics of your personal users or collection pieces. Closed pics appreciated as well.

Don't seem to be too many pics on dealer sites with closed pics.

I don't have any so I can't help you on the pattern. I can say that GEC makes an incredible production knife. Whether you get a sunfish or something else you will be happy with their product.

Also wanted to say it's good to see you wander over this way my friend.:)

Oeser! Nice to see ya!

Not like I have money to buy any other knives, but I really need something less intimidating and more pocket friendly for when I am wearing a suit. I still can't take it into court (stupid rules! the real problem is that Anyone can bring what ever they feel like into court because my po-dunk county does not have any security, or metal detectors.....) but I can't risk having a knife or anything else on me!

Whattup, Bigfattyt.

The GEC Sunfish/Toenail is my favorite pattern slipjoint -although I have been leaning towards carrying a #56 instead the last couple of months. The Sunfish has great heft and very satisfying "thunk" when it opens up.

A couple closed:

I say go for it. It is most excellent :D:thumbup:

Man I want one like the last pic there, such a nice looking sunfish! I only have a RR sunfish but definitely want some better ones in carbon steel.

I seem to remember hearing some one refer to a knife like this as an "elephant toe" but is that a different style?

Thanks for posting those pics!!!!

A saw another user sunfish on a thread with a nice patina.

They have 3 names but are all the same thing pretty much: Elephants toe nail, Sunfish and English rope knife.

The Sunfish is one of my favorites. I'm currently using one daily to test it as an EDC.

I hear ya. Not too many people run for cover when you pull out a traditional slip joint. Most people have grown up with a father or grandfather that carried one every day.

Might not bring it to court but to the office or even church should be fine. I find myself carrying a traditional knife almost every day now. Once in a while I'll throw in a paramilitary but not too often.

I think you will find there are many, many patterns to choose from. You might find one you like or one hundred. The nice thing is they don't have to break the bank.

Stick around man, it's a good place.

I have one. The main blade is really big. Almost seems like one to carry in a sheath for a camping knife. If you have BIG pockets and hands, it might work as an edc. Great product, just xxl.

I have 2

I like both very much, amber is 2010 crimson is 2011
the second is also a UNXLD, sick sharp from the factory, great finish, the one I use
the knife is pretty hefty, strong and medium sized, cuts great, F&F is very high
only "drawback" is that I can feel the small blade closed when using the large one a bit, it's thin but raised, "disturbs" a little more than a closed blade on a trapper or like the sheepfoot on a stockman

for me a great knife, can only suggest it, both to collect and use
maxx

I carry a GEC Northfield Sunfish in stag daily. Used to carry it mostly in the pocket but have since gone to a belt sheath mainly as I like to have my pockets free. The weight never really bothered me much. Mine is not nearly as mint looking as those posted as it has been a user from day one.

It is not a very popular pattern, but I like it a lot. If I could change one thing I would have had the small blade be a sheepsfoot style.

I think Sunfish and Elephant Toes are roughly the same size. It seems like some makes a slightly smaller one called a Sleeveboard. I really want to pick up an Elephant Toe. But its really hard to decide which one when everyone keeps posting those fantastic pictures!

I keep telling myself I've got Mexican Bocote in another pattern so I should just stick with that but I really like the tortoishell and the walnut and the ...

I found this site good on the topic...if you search these forums there are some pretty good threads too.

This one Bernard gives some good incite...really the various names for this pattern all relate to the same basic knife (having an incredibly large main).

Thanks for those links!

Here is a follow up question I guess. Above, some one mentioned the secondary blade was a bit distracting, or uncomfortable in the hand while using the primary.

Does any one offer this pattern with only the primary blade?

There are only a very few companies even producing the pattern at present and I have never have seen one with only one blade. You would probably be venturing into custom territory to get something like that.

I personnally have never had an issue with the small blade when having the large one opened.

Thats my thoughts too, I did think that a custom sleeveboard sunfish with only the main would be cool, have an excessively large, ultra wide spear blade with a nicely profiled handle. But I am the same in that the secondary doesnt bother me so I'm thinking the tractor green jigged bone northfield sunfish would be a winner.

A.G. Russell Makes a single blade that locks.
There are a couple of elements which will keep me from trying it but it does look interesting.

I have one with snakewood handles. I'll get some photos and post them in a little.

I have three...one all-steel in Black Cherry...two in Pumpkin Bone; I liked the pattern so much I got a user for me and one to set aside for my son when he's of age.
