Jut thought i would let everyone know where to get a really nice flat surface, for flat sanding, leather work, etc. head to your local granite counter top store and ask if they have any remnants in the yard. i have gotten 4 nice size chunks for free, and last time i was there the girl took my number because they had just thrown a bunch away. they make a perfect flat surface since the top is finished and are nice and heavy so they dont move around when put on a work bench, unlike glass. these have many other uses as well i am sure, but i am still working on that!

I have a bunch of granite left over from my countertops. I did just as you and use it for lapping.

Check your granite with a known good straight edge before taking it home.

I have some pieces of granite left over from the counter tops that I had installed in my kitchen. They were cut from two 26" x 96" panels. These had the bullnose pre-formed on one long and one short edge. One of the panels was flat. The other panel had over 1/8" of crown along the 26" dimension.

Ask specifically for sink cutouts and you're more likely to get a flat surface. If the stone where they mounted a sink had a crown, the sink wouldn't mount right ;)

I use a gigantic granite surface platen 24x18 with ledge sides for clamping grade A black granite with .000150 overall tolerance on the flatness of the surface... it's monstrous over 200lbs, more than almost anyone needs... but the price was right. I picked it up at the NECKA hammerin for 75$

i seen on the news that natural granite can contain radon gas. you might want to check the pieces you are getting if its something that would worry you. they suggest anyone with granite countertops to have it checked for radon.

I got a big double sink cutout of this stuff. I use 1/2 for my leather work and the other for my dead flat surface plate. Jim

Just to add another source. If you would like a little thicker. I got mine at a monument and tombstone place. They where scraps. One is about 12x12x4 and one is 12x16x3. both sides were polished.

Were they Dead Flat?

I couldn't resist.

That might explain why food left out on the new counter for a short time will glow in the dark.
