I need i little advise for a great knife for when i deploy. i already plan on bringing a fixed blade(Izula) i just wanted some advise on a folder thats easy to field strip and something thats really durable any advise would be great. thank you in advance

You might try an old SF trick...Swiss Army ( I like my alox Farmer) tied with about 18inches 550 cord to a butane lighter (visible fuel level). Attach with about 2ft of duct (duck) tape. Loop behind belt with halfhitch and drop in front pocket. It will be there when you need it. regards Les

Personally I wouldn't even take a folder, I never carried one when I was in and deployed, just another thing to worry about that's not really needed.

A USMC K-Bar will do 99% of what you ever would need a knife for and the other 1% well likely you wouldn't really need it done away. ;)

Well if you are in the military I'd take advantage and pick up a Microtech Scarab or halo. Then and again You can't really strip it easily but shouldn't have to. All you got is the hole in the front, if it has a problem just a bit of zippo lighter fluid and its completely good as new.

i'll take into strong consideration. thank you

the microtec is a little bit out of my budget, and i'am trying to go with the simple method less stuff to go wrong

Autos + sand/dirt = nothing but problems

Auto knives have been confiscated from returning soldiers so I wouldn't advise one at all. There is one guy on another forum who instead of giving up a perfectly good Microtech he shoved the blade in a crack on the concrete floor and snapped it off and gave them the pieces.

Many Hi Speed/Low Drag soldiers have figured that a fixed blade between 3-5 inches is plenty enough. Anything over 5 inches is overkill. Of course I would always supplement that with a multi-tool and a folding knife.

On my trips to ye' ol' sandbox, a Leatherman Wave has filled the bill. I find it much more useful than a folder, and less likely to piss me off if I break/lose it.

What will your job be there?

Multi-tool is a good choice.

Id take something like a Spyderco Endura or Benchmade folder.

Seriously? wow that is some BS...Couldn't you just mail it to ...yourself in a sense?

i'll second the Leatherman Wave (or similar) + Fixed blade concept.

my cousin served in the Australian SAS in Afghanistan and swore by a pliers based multitool and a beefy fixed blade.

the USMC Ka-Bar knives are a proven performer.

I think you need an ESEE-3Mil or ESEE-4. They come in black and and a desert tan. I would get the plain edge because it'd be easy to sharpen with any run of the mill whetstone or a file or sandpaper or probably a rock. Not cheap (about $99) but no huge loss if it gets lost. They'll replace it if it breaks no matter how you break it...especially on a deployment serving our country. Tough, no nonsense carbon steel.

Then keep a nice little SAK in your pocket and you're good to go.

That's what I think. God be with you on your deployment.
