Great knife for deployment?

I'd second...or is it third now? the fixed blade + multi-tool or SAK. I think the multi-tool would be a better choice than a SAK as it has a larger blade, and quite a bit more tools.

also, another thank you for your service!

I spent 8 years in the Infantry before multi tools were around and used a Buck 110 and a camillus demo knife from 1966 and a pair of commo pliers for everything you can possibly imagine both state side and on 3 overseas deployments. Never needed more than that to get the job done. I would have liked to have had a Leatherman back then. Hope this helps and thanks for your service.

Do you have any restrictions on blades? I've heard that some soldiers are regulated in what they can carry.

Also doesn't the military issue a multitool?

As for suggestion, fixed: kabar, Scrapyard Regulator (like a super kabar) Swamp rat RDM or HRLM, Becker BK2, BK7. Ontario spec plus line is also full of good options.

Folders: I wouldn't even bother but if you must, a endura or practically any spyderco, kershaw, or benchmade would do.

I'd say SMF for sure, but if Microtech is out of the budget, that probably is too. Although, be aware that Strider gives a fantastic discount (something like 50% off) to enlisted folk, and if you're being deployed, I'd say you qualify.

Otherwise, I gotta agree with Ankerson on this one.

No matter what you choose, good luck, and godspeed brother. Come back in one piece.

Not been over, but the knife I use at the base the most is a Leatherman Supertool. I would probably take a fixed blade over if I was going. One thing to consider is deploying your blade and resheathing under awkward circumstances. I have a Buck Nighthawk in a "tight" Kydex sheath on my LBE so that I do not have to worry about unfastening or fastening a retention strap which might be a distraction at the wrong time. I can also access it easily when in MOPP gear. As to why the Buck Nighthawk, it was designed for use by the Military and is easily replaceable. I picked a couple on clearance at Wally world several years back for $20 a piece. I always like to have a spare, especially when I have a Kydex sheath that cost more than the knife that goes in it.:D Last comment, I don't really see an advantage to a camoflage blade and handle for most people, it just makes your knife harder to find if you drop it.

Watch your Six,

Get a CQC10 or a waved Endura for your BDU front pocket knife. You already have the fixed blade thing taken care of... Can't knock the Izula.

When I went to Iraq (03-04) as an infantryman, I brought these knives with me: Emerson Commander BT (gave it away because the liner lock would slip with minimal spine pressure), BM30SPL (was told by my command I couldn't have a butterfly knife so it went to my B Bag), Gerber Applegate-Fairbarne Covert with sharpened false edge (gave it to my medic who became one of best buds there). While I was there, I ordered a few knives. My mother was a joint holder of my bank account so I could call her or email her with the info and $ amount to send to the dealer. One of them was a Dagger Logo MT CFO2, I wasn't allowed to carry for the same reason as the BM balisong, because my command said it looked menacing. Hello? Anyone home? This is in an infantry unit. Our job is to kill people, WTF over? The other two knives were accepted as legit by all. One was a Cuda Dominator which I wore on my IBA next to the Surefire E2 I bought before deployment. The other was a MT D/A Socom clip point, carried in my RF BDU pocket. Back in 03-04, you could ship pretty much anything home. I shipped my CFO2 home along with a crudely made brass knuckle from some haji. The MP's who act as US Customs officials when inspecting all the shit you return home with, told me that any BM auto that has an NSN number was legit to come back with. I hid my D/A Socom in a hidden pocket in my "flick" ... the useless airsoft looking vest that comes with your CIF. No problems.

Your mileage may vary.

Why no fixed blade?

Honestly, it's prolly due to my preference of folders purely for the cool factor. I owe that to being a Californian, where you can't legally conceal a fixed blade of any size (eek, guess the razor blade I kept in the wallet when I later got into dope was a nogo)... I just now remembered I did bring one fixed blade. A S&W double edged boot knife resmbling the Gerber Guardian. I bought it outside of Ft Campbell but was told I couldn't have a double edged knife so I took a diamond stone to one side and rounded it off. When I got to theater, my Sgt asked my WTF I did that for... I learned early that some rules are subject to personal opinion of those with more rank. Ended up giving the knife to a guy in my fire time.

Thank you for your service.
Consider a Meyerchin folder, They can be heavy, although there are a couple titanium versions that cut the weight down. They are suggested because the blade is a sheeps' foot, and they are designed for battoning rope, and also have a sturdy fid to help untie knots.

they have issued me a gerber 600 multitool. i believe retrictions are based on the unit level, but for the most part it's common since not to bring the zombie killing machete or sword but something under 6 in blade is fine

I was issued some iteration of the Gerber multi-plier. I think I traded it away for a SOG in black finish with gears on the plier pivots. Those Gerbers are crap in my opinion. Remember, the manufacturer of your equipment is always the lowest bidder for the Gov contract.

I havn't had an issue yet with the gerber, but i haven't put it through the paces yet either. I have heard nothing good about them and plan on getting a leatherman soon.

Excellent choice. Don't get the Wave, however. You'll have to sharpen the main blade after most uses (420 steel).

You are going to the desert, right? Then get yourself what the desert people call a "Crysknife" with is made from the teeth of the worms in the deep desert (specimens have been found that grow to 400 meters). These knives come in 2 variants, fixed and un-fixed. If your knife is not a fixed variant, you must keep it within the magnetic field given off by your (living) body or it will decompose within 2 weeks. These knives are great for killing Harkonnens.

Every knife nut should read the book and then see the movie. Dune is amazing on so many levels.
