Hey guys, so I found a guy who has a couple 3hp 3ph baldor motors that he is willing to sell me for $50 bucks each, seemed like a pretty good deal:

Unfortunately the motor enclosure is OPSB (open slotted band). Not really sure what that means, but am slightly uncomfortable about the whole "open" thing. Any input? This would really help my grinder budget out...
 
It'll be no biggy, just put a lady's stocking over the motor, or give it a blow with the compressor daily.
 
Ok, so if I get one of these for the belt grinder I'm planning on building, do you think I should get 2, the other for a disc grinder? I know 3hp is probably fairly overpowered for a disc grinder, but the price seems right. Is there a significant drawback that I'm missing? Am I even going to be able to find a disc for a 7/8" shaft, or am I going to have to fiddle around with some sort of shaft adapter/getting the shaft turned down on a lathe/other horrible nonsense?
 
I don't know much about disc grinders so you'll have to wait on that one. I'd get 2, or maybe 3. that way you have 1 for backup and 1 for each project. That's a good price, you are lucky to have 3 phase
 
Buy them all. Open motors won't last forever used as grinders, and the closer they are to the dust, the faster they'll wear out. But for $50 each... take the money you saved and buy some good VFDs. Do whatever you can to separate the motor from the grinding dust. The abrasive can cause wear in bearings and elsewhere, and the metal dust can cause shorts. I'm sure you could find a machinist who could bore out the hole in a disk to fit a 7/8" shaft, but if you mount the disk on a shaft supported by a couple pillow blocks and drive it with a belt, you can build your stand to keep plywood between the motor and the dust.
 
I use a Baldor 3 hp open frame 3 phase motor on my main grinder. It works great, like Sam says I blow it out from time to time with the compressor as a precaution. I say go for it, both of 'em. Sounds like a good deal.
 
Thanks for the responses everyone. I guess I'll probably pick up 2 or 3 of them. Now to find a good cheap VFD...
 
So I went and picked up two of the motors today. Brand new in plastic wrap and Baldor boxes. Awesome. If anyone is in the Cincinnati area and wants to get one (or more) of these, let me know and I'll give you the guys number.
 
Ok, sorry to triple post in my own thread, but I didn't really want to start up a new thread for this.

So how do you guys feel about this for a VFD: http://dealerselectric.com/item.asp?PID=737 ?

I know the enclosure isn't right, but I was thinking that I could just put it in a separate enclosure and wire some remote control on/off switch and speed control. Is that going to work out ok? I tried reading all the old threads that mention VFD's, and it seems like people have done it like this before.

So does this VFD look ok? If I put it in a separate enclosure, do I need to mount a filter and cooling fan on that enclosure?
 
Several people here use the Teco VFD's Salem Straub uses one IIRC and has it mounted in another room with a speed pot and switch for both his grinders in his grinding room. Since they don't have a NEMA 4 enlcosure, you have to protect them from the grinding dust.
I've also seen a few people make a wooden box with an auto filter and fan so it can be mounted closer to the grinder.
