great new field guide

nice... I have the audobon book on mushrooms its good but I like this new one much better.. the info seems to be laid out in a much more comprehensive way.

Looks pretty good but I would be reluctant to eat anything based only on a book identification. I did a day of mushrooming with Wildman Steve Brill and there are some scary mushrooms out there, ones that kill you slowly over a couple of weeks

Yeah I did seeral walks with steve brill I'll do more..I'd do them all if he wasn't such a dweeb though... LOL

Lots of poison mushrooms look like edible ones. When I lived in Alabama, I would read in the paper about families found dead at the dinner table after a day of mushroom hunting.

Mushrooms can do some crazy things to your body like melt you kidneys and things like that.

THat is true...I'm not saying go look at a book and bon appetite I wouldn't read a book on firearms and head to the range either (without prior experience).. but the education needs to start somewhere...recognizing specific genus of mushrooms is the first part... there are also many types of mushrooms that have no dangerous look alikes..and many which have other uses such as tinder bracket fungus, and razor fungus (another bracket whis can be used as a strop.. My wife grew up in rural Russia these folks where poor in the worst kind of way...she thinks it's odd that so many good mushrooms in the park go to waste..I haven't let her pick them yet because I suspect that there might be some different species across the sea.. All I'm saying is it's a good book.

I personally don't mind anything in book for plant id, however I pretty much draw the line on mushrooms, unless its the very very very common kind where you can find in farmers market and its so obvious, anything else I'lll pass. Mushrooms are nasty things if you don't know what you are looking at.
