Great Scifi movies

You guys have listed some of the great ones, but have missed a very funny and campy si/fi movie that I love. Then again, I may be the only one that likes it. :o The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. That movie is a great, funny one and has some very good actors in it. Peter Weller, Clancy Brown ( Kurgan from Highlander) Jeff Goldblum to mention the ones that come to mind quickly.
It is one of those campy cult movies with me and some friends.
Hellboy was sort of fun.
Underworld I liked also.
The Blade trilogy is some stuff I like.
Highlander was one of my favorites.
The Chronicles of Riddick, fun.
I know these are more fantacy adventure, but I puddle it all together in my simple mind. ;)

Not Sci-Fi, but we are hooked on "24" with Keifer Sullivan. Ordering three DVDs at a time. There are six DVDs for Season One, we just began Season Two. This program is addictive!

This takes place in real time, which is kind of gimmicky, but 'damn they make it work! One hour segments that equal one hour of life of the characters in the series.

My sister and her son had to get a Bolckbuster's membership where you bring back several DVDs and pick up more. They spent most of the weekend watching this.

"24" stands for 24 one hour segments.

Gotta run, Netflix just sent us three more! The beginning of Season Two!

I have never seen anything so addictive!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "Dark City" with Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, and Ian Richardson. This one is in the same class as "Blade Runner" and "Brazil".

And if you like these movies, check out "The City of Lost Children".

Hey Bill, check out Qubehead's post on page 2 of this thread. That was one of his picks. Mr. BadExample mentioned it as well a couple of posts later.

I have never seen it but based on these recommendations I'm going to have to check it out for sure.

Tnx.

Oops. Missed them. But "Dark City" really deserves more than an afterthought when it comes to Sci-fi movies.

I recently heard of Firefly. I had previously believed The Simpsons was the greatest television show of all time, but Firefly may have edged it out.

Only one season was shot, and evidently no-one watched it at the time, but it's been released on DVD. Everyone I know who's watched it absolutely LOVED it. (The movie should be out in a few months, entitled Serenity).

Watch it. Really. Jordy and I started watching these a week ago, and despite a busy schedule, we're halfway through the season.

I must be nuts because I liked Johnny Mnemonic (starring Keannu Reeves).

Still waiting for Neuromamncer to be made into a movie, ideally by the Wachowskis

The Matrix trilogy is the my favourite all time.

Forbidden planet: It is full of old cliches; however, this was the imaginative film that first employed many of them.

Frankenstien: A classic early sci-fi. The BW 30s version is still my favorite

The Thing from another world: nice writting and clever editing packs a alot of suspense, humor, and terror into this movie. A very well balanced film that does its best to provide plenty of internal conflict without degrading any of the characters. (this film served as a template for Jaws)

The War of the Worlds (1950s): The alien's technology is vastly superior to our own, but it is not infalable.

2001-2010: The first film always manages to raise my blood pressure. Not only is it a beautifully movie, but one which captures all of the optomistic enthusiam of the space race which we would so spectacularly come to squander just a handful of years later. 2010 is more of traditional adventure piece. It will help you to understand 2001 and return you to our disfunctional world.

Mission to Mars: A truly lousy movie. This one is so poorly done that I found myself LOLROTF from beginning to end. Just about every scene defies physics, or reason.

Screamers ...when your tired of the mainstream SciFi.
Funny :) I just rented this saturday, Screamers on netflix, because of the same reason. IMHO it's a very underrated movie.

Favorites also include Terminator II and Terminator I(yes, in that order), 5th element, Predator(with 2 governators in it), Matrix (only that, MII/MIII sucked big time)

WOW! I was 13 when this came out and had --- well a certain kind of dreams about Anne Francis and her short skirt..... And when she said, "I've never seen a man before....."

The basic concept of a race that figured out how to create reality from thoughts was also fascinating -- too bad it also created "monsters from the id."

Really says that you need to get your act together before you start visualizing.

Too bad it never worked with Anne Francis and my dreams ......

Train spotting (sort of!!??) Planet of the apes

Another favorite of mine is 1981's "The Thing". A great "who's the alien?" movie that really puts you in the characters' shoes of being isolated and mistrusting of everyone around you. The make-up effects are awesome. All practical and WAY before CGI. Yet, they still look pretty dang good. I have it on DVD and they have remastered it. It has never looked better.

Man, I'm going to have to see what other SCi-Fi gems I have in my collection. This thread rocks.

I know what you mean.

Bought a copy of Riddick, and loved it again. Then I rented Resident Evil II, and was disappointed.

Next up are all the Dead movies by George Romero. I've seen them all before, but I don't recall the all of the "Day of the Dead". I know that some might call them horror movies, but I still think they are sci-fi, there isn't anything scary like Pinhead in those movies!

Romero is doing Land of the Dead now. Let's hope it's more like his Dawn of the Dead!
I forgot about the Carpenter remake of The Thing- one of my all time faves. I usually like Carpenter's movies- They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, Starman, The Thing... though he has had some stinkers.

What about on the low-end of the scale:

There have been many interesting low budget sci-fi movies.

One of my favorites was Ib Melchior (1964) The Time Travelers. A team of scientist trying to develop a window with which to view our past or future, ends up accidentally tripping across a time portal instead. Now trapped in a bleak future they must find a way to survive.

This film covers more ground with its miniscule budget then most of Hollywood blockbusters. It is funny, campy, creative, and incredibly brutally violent. It also has one of my favorite treatments of the whole cornball time travel plot line.

Honorable mention should also go to It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), which eventually evolved to be retold as Alien. Never has any spaceship carried so many tons of useless WWII vintage weapondry.
