Here is something I use in my shop that has made things much more convenient and safe.
It's called "X 10."
X 10 is remote control technology that has been around for quite some time. It controls items via pulses through your existing wiring. A controller plugs into any wall socket. A receiver plugs into any other wall socket. You plug the device to be controlled into the receiver. You can turn blowers, dust collectors, lights, any machinery under 400 amps, on/off from the controller.
Wireless remotes are also available. Controller will operate multiple receivers.
It's not expensive-less than $10 per unit. You no longer have to reach over/bend down to plug stuff in! There are wall switches available, too.
Incandescent lights can be dimmed from the controllers.
This stuff works great in the house, too. I even use it to control my garage door.
If anyone is interested, I can help you find it. Ebay is a great source. I can also walk you through installation if needed.

...I need a sphincter mounted remote for my E-Stop button...

This is a really good tip, it seems like they have gotten a little more reasonable lately, Imona check it out. Thanks

Nathan, you are too funny, I got a couple of CNCs too, dinosours compared to what's common today. I have Bridgeport and a Koma 4' X 8'

HAHA!

Anyone that runs CNC's would recognize this comment. Sometimes it seems that the e stop could be 1ft diameter and it would still be too small when you need it!

Thanks for the laugh.

I have one of these switches laying around here somewhere..(X10)..along with several cameras (one can pan and tilt) and a few remotes as well for switching between the cameras on a tv or such. Have been thinking I need to get rid of them as they are collecting dust. :(

O my goodness that just made my day :D. a guy at work the other day put a 1" endmill right through his vice. a perfect hole right above the ball screw. I walked over and he pulled out a sharpy marker and wrote "OIL" by the hole. i had a good chuckle.

Absolutely. Watts, not amps.
It's still good stuff to hook up in the shop and house.

Nathan:

I really like the post e-stop gut wrench feeling, following by the "What the %!?!# happened?" question.

Yeah me too. So I have all of mine wired into an X10 system that dispenses a soothing lavender scent while dimming the lighting some and playing soothing music to reduce the chances of me stroking out. They used to just stop the machine.

I thought my suggestion might help.
At least it was fodder for some humor.

I have some experience with x-10 at work and it is handy but at times has a mind of it's own. We have problems with one outside light coming on every time the Mill is used and a diff. outside light coming on whenever the lathe is used. Other than that, sometimes things just wont work one day, change around some transmitters or try later and they work fine.
Technology is supposed to help us but often it just complicates our lives.
