I know alot of you nut jobs like the winter and trecking through 4 feet of snow, but the spring is what I am waiting for! The last few days have been a nice taste of what is coming. Temps in the mid to high 50's, sun, and just the right amount of breeze has made for some perfect, bugless hiking weather!

Big Mike showed me this spot last summer, so I took Marcelo to it yesterday. It's a very cool spot with old iron ore mines and some granite quarries..

Here are some pics!

Note the piece of wood in Marcelo's hand. I'll explain in a minute..

Okay, about that wood Marcelo is holding. I have been getting into the habbit of making a bowdrill fire with materials I find while out in the woods. So during our lunch break we found this cool spot on a big rock outcropping. It was a great spot; over looking a stream and the rest of the area. So I went to work shaping the spindle, the hearth, and the making the bow.

The tools! Prototype Izula and RC-5!

So I went to widen the divot in the hearth and put the drill I just shaped down. Then I realized my mistake. The rock outcropping we were on wasn't that level, I realized that as I watched my spindle roll and fall 30' down into a creak. Next time I will pick a not so picturesque area to create a bow drill fire.. lol

The look of defeat.

Oh well, we live we learn. No bow drill fire today, we moved on..

This guy can't hike an hour with out letting his wife know where he is.. Whipped!!

It was a very cool hike. Not another soul around cool terrain and a great mix of deciduous, coniferous and other evergreen flora. The best part was when we cam up to the gates of Mordor! The very little litter we saw was pull tab bud cans (>30 years old?).

Great pics guys. Hey Marcelo, is that the Mears woodsman shirt? How do you like it, I was wanting one of those and wondered if it's worth saving up for.

Great pics! What's that thing that looks like it's part of Dracula's castle?

Wow. What great masonry on that old mine site!!!

You guys have some really cool woods up there!!!!

So are the big cages to keep people from going in the mines??

It's a loggers shirt from duluth trading company. Not nearly as expensive as a Mears product. It is made from a light duck material, kind of like the lighter weight carhartt pant material. It's tough as hell and has arm gussets for when I have to flex :D. It's like five years old and still looks and feels new. The only problem is I have to wear an undershirt as it tends to irritate the nips.

Yes, they are crazy dumb stupid Deep yo.

Cool pics, Tony. The structures are really cool, especially when it looks as if there isn't much else around.

Very cool stuff guys, thanks for sharing the trip :) Good habit too, of doing the bow drill on every outing!

Wow! That's the kind of hike I like. I could spend hours going over all the structures looking at little details.

Looks like it was a perfect day to be out there!

Thanks for the heads up, I'm gonna check that one out

!

That area is real cool. There are lil plaques through out the area that explain what everything is. Even old pictures from the 1800's. That was once a a lil town with a hotel, train station, and a bunch of lil shops through out. It originaly started out as an Iron ore mine, but then was purchased and became 1 of the largest Granite quarries in the north east. If you look around you will find old foundations, stones with tool marks, etc. The forests just swallowed it all up!

Big Mike knows all the history of these places. It is always great to hike with Mike, cause he gives you a history lesson on the area:thumbup:

Definitely an old furnace. That one is in very good shape. Excellent photos.
