Actually the original question could be a base for an objective evaluation of what “the greatest” knife is ( similar to figure skating judgement). Let's set a few areas we use knives: EDC, survival, SD, esthetics, collectible index, etc...

We can assume for simplicity that each area has an equal weight (or assign different statistical weight to each area, for instance make EDC more important than SD).

Then we need 20+ experts to assign a value on a scale on 1 to 10 to each candidate for each area (we could take all knives mentioned in this thread as candidates) to make the results statistically valid.

As a final step we should divide the accumulated points for each area from all experts to the current street price of the knife.

The calculated number would represent the price/performance ratio for the knife.

It may sound over-complicated but it is actually very simple exercise and could be done in Excel in minutes. I can do it.

We are not looking for Cadillac or Yugo, we are trying to find Toyota in the knife world.

I could set up a web page with a list of candidates, defined areas and drop-down boxes to assign values,
but it would be better to keep the whole thing in the forum.

Anybody is interested to participate?
Anybody is interested to make a new thread setup (if possible)?
Anybody [from platinum/golden members ] is interested to take a lead to resolve technical issues like candidates, areas, weights, street price etc...
Anybody is interested in the results?

It was new and never used - but after some using... ;)

Kind regards

For a basic heavy folder, you cannot beat an American classic - a basic Buck 110. Still available <$30 at most Wally Worlds. Want something nicer - and made for you? Go to Buck's website and order a 'Buck Custom Shop 110' - in S30V blade steel; nickel silver bolsters; royal blue Dymondwood (etc); with/without rivets; and with a nylon belt sheath - delivered stateside for ~$85 in a few weeks.

Now, for a great value in a fb, how do you top a Buck 119 from WallyWorld <$40? Well, for ~$20-$21 delivered, you could have a Mora knife made for bushcraft - the Mora 'High Q Robust'. See both below.

Oddly, both of the Bucks are US made knives - and can cost as little ~$75 total at a WallyWorld - inc s/t. Go for the Buck Custom Shop 110 and the Mora fb, and you'ss spend an etra $30-$50. Decisions??

It's a great time for knife enthusiast, there so many great buys out there these days:thumbup:

To bad the days of $40 FRN Spyderco Native's at Wallyworld are over, was a hard deal to beat.

I have to agree with the Spyderco Native. It's hard to beat for the price.
Also, the BM H&K Conspiracy comes to mind, razor sharp Ti Frame Lock for $65.

Amazing when I realize that I have or had pretty much every knife shown here. I have never owned the Rat 1 however and should rectify that situation. From what I have: Four inch clip Voyager....... An endura peels spuds better but the Voyager feels more robust.

Then there is the Mora 546 .................. Just remembered this one.

My choices my be a little on the "high" side, but "for the money" is very subjective. To me, for a folder, the Spyderco Delica 4 is tough to beat, and for fixed, the Esee Izula 2 is great.
