Just got a semi skinner & caper from Greco website. John Greco going out of business due to multiple health issues. Has some awesome prices on his remaining inventory. Be sure to call him & ask if you don't see something you want (diffrent scales, etc) Talked to him on the phone last wednsday-one of the best knife guys you'll ever want to meet. Shipping seems instant. The two I got are very sheeple friendly EDC's.

Never saw a Greco knife but have heard that they are a very quality product. Went to the site to look around and thought that the shipping is outrageous, 15.00 for the first knife and 5.00 for each knife there after! My first thought was gee at those prices is Mr. Greco driving them to my house himself?

I know the shipping prices are higher than what one normally pays, but the knives are shipped priority and are insured.

edited for spelling

pretty much the reason I still haven't ordered from Greco as of yet. the falcon at 75 is a decent price, but tack on that 15 for shipping and it is no longer so attractive.

I don't think they are kidding, but I think they don't understand the processes involved. This came up in regards to the cost of shipping for another small company.

Small companies, espcially one person ones, takes a significant amount of time to box stuff up and get it to the shipper.

Let's say I wish to pay myself $40 an hour, and it takes 15 minutes to get an order out, that's $10 for labor right there not including the shipping costs. Add $5 for priority USPS and you're right at $15.

If you are a larger company you can get economy of scale in the labor costs of shipping, that's probably what people are expecting.

My guess is that Tom is wondering if they are kidding about a Greco knife not being worth $90 shipped...they are nice blades, sorry to hear that John's having health problems and retiring from the business.

I've never said they are not nice blades, I have no experience with them at all from which to comment. about the only thing I know about them I hear on the web or from that one article in TK.

my point was simply that the high shipping charge ($15 for first knife and goes up from there) discouraged me from ordering from Greco.

I ordered three after a fun conversation with John. We talked of motorcycles and knives and trucks. Anything that came up.

He said if he packaged more than ten boxes a day, his hands would swell up and he couldn't continue. He lost a day when this happened. His body isn't working for him, but his brain is 100%.

For me to hear this it sure overcame any thoughts of what he was charging.. This, for him is work, and he is suffering--as simple as it may sound to you and me with healthy hands.

So, I say swallow the cost and get them now. You will never EVER see a new custom at these prices again.

Coop

Bought two and thinking to maybe get a few more. John Greco has been around a long time and gave a lot of people the chance to own their first handmade knife with his low prices. Where are you gonna get a handmade fixed blade for $50 or folder for $90???
We're talking about a guy who has been a knifemaker for a long time and a heck of a nice guy too. He's retiring because of health reasons, not because he has too much money or he's too old. Chances are he has no pension having been self employed and may have to live on the money he makes from this clearance sale for a long time.
Like Coop(good seeing you in NY buddy) I spoke to John on the phone for a long time. His hands swell up so bad sometimes he cant pull his pants up and they hurt like hell. Not a fun situation.
If his shipping prices are a little high, so what, as was said, there is also the time and pain of packaging.
Let's show one of the good guys in this business some support.
Just MHO.

well i opened anoher thread for Greco folders, but i have to reply also here.
i'm in italy, i received the Falcon folder yesterday and i'm very happy : and i dont undestand the complaining for 15 usd... but do you know that the falcon was 130 usd + shipping ? and still was a great price.
it's an hell of knife, beefy and strong and precisley assembled, blade centered and no bending , a very field knife you can trust.
and is also smooth..

i payed 100 usd for it (25 shipping) and still i'm happy, also i plan to buy more of them , not least , John is a pleasure to deal with and his health problems are real..

as other stated: where do you find a custom folder for 90 usd ?

thanks and regards to everybody
