Green Beret Destruction Test

Don't hit the Green Beret with a 3lb steel mallet. Got it.

Wait a minute ....

Why would I hit ANY knife with a steel mallet, again?

Somehow I don't care... the fact that it is Green Beret's knife is the only recommendation I've ever needed.

Just a note. I do not own a CR knife. I had nothing to do with the test. I just posted this here since some people that visit this forum may not visit the reviews section. So if it does get hot, don't take it out on me. :D

I'm honestly not trying to take things out on anyone. Rather, I'm just trying to point out the utter stupidity of destruction testing of knives.

Work the knife over thoroughly doing things that you(*) might expect to reasonably expect to do with a knife (including batoning with a WOOD baton if you want). If the knife fails from that kind of use, then you might have a problem. After that, if you want to start slicing up sheet metal or chopping cinder blocks, have at it. But don't be surprised if a lot of us think of the tester as a bit of a dunce.

(*) Here, I'm using the word 'you' in the generic sense, and I don't mean it to refer to any specific poster or tester.

I didn't take it that way. The "Don't take it out on me" was just thrown out there, as these things can become heated.:cool:

As for my opinion. I think Noss's tests are absurd for most of us. I would never do what he does to a knife. For that matter, I would never do what a lot of people do to knives. I carry thin knives that excel at cutting, and wouldn't stand up to prying gum off my shoe. If I need to pry, I'll get a pry-bar. If I need to break concrete, I'll get a cold-chisel.

That said. In today's market, a lot of companies take the route of touting the "toughness" of their knives. What Noss does is take knives to their "toughness" limit to determine which, he believes, are the "toughest" knives available. Considering the GB is advertised as Tough, Exceptional, and Uncompromising, I believe it falls into that category.

Watched the test and was surprised by the result. I've used a Project 1 and it was a great user.

Could it be a flaw in that particular knife and that another Green Beret knife would perform better? Can I also say, I don't know the exact function of this knife, is it for fighting or field tasks or both? It looks more for fighting imho and maybe thats why it didn't do well in the tests?

As for the tests Noss does I think some are a bit over the top but I think the point is to show which knife is the toughest (for his tests). If he only tested for realistic tasks then a lot of knives would be scoring about the same, so you could get a scenario where a $50 knife scored the same as a $500 knife.
Maybe he could add a section at the start with some more 'normal' tasks but who decides what is a 'normal' task.

At the end of the day Noss has no agenda, he just tests the knives and lets the vids do the talking. As far as I can see he makes no money from doing his tests and is not backed by any maker so his purpose is educate himself and others.

I love how this crap comes up when I test these high end designer knives and people don't get the results they want to see.

Do you have to accept it no you don't. but I always get called names when this happens. So I guess nothing new to see here.

For the Record: Yes I abuse the knives beyond belief during the tests. I can not show a knife is tough without some serious hard use and abuse.

Since I don't own a Green Beret knife, nor do have any desire to own one, I fail to see how I could "want" any particular result.

The testing methodology is stupid, period. It's like saying, "Gee, I drove this pickup truck into a brick wall and it was destroyed, so I guess it wasn't really built 'Ram tough.'"

Yep, that sure is helpful, yes it is.... (not)

No no no......Nobody was calling you a dunce in this thread about your destruction test. He was simply pointing out to us..in this thread...about your destruction test that people that do them are dunces. It's a good thing a (*) was put in the post to direct our attention to the caveat clarifying that he wasn't calling you a dunce....only people that do these tests in general...but not you specifically.

I think he should be given an infraction for insulting a member that performs tests many members are interested in seeing.

How you know if a Ram truck is tough or not until you put it under some serious stress ?

There is an awesome BMW commercial that shows them testing their cars to the limits. They say in the commercial most will never subject their cars to the extreme but a few will. It's a great commercial.

I don't exacly recall but where were you when I posted the last 10 tests. I don't ever recall you coming in those threads and complaining.

As far as I know I am the only one who does them publicly so I think the Dunce name was directed at me. I could be wrong. :D

You forgot about Cliff. Though I believe he's been called a lot worse.

Mercedes-Benz has a commerical like that as well. I agree with the idea of testing ones knife. Good work. It is a let down about the performance.

BMW tests their vehicles to see if they can do what they were designed to do.

Are you claiming that the Green Beret was designed to pound through sheet metal, and be hit with a 3lb steel mallet? If so, I'd like to see the CRK literature that makes this claim. Please forward it to me.

You posted destruction tests in the Chris Reeve forum in the past? I don't see your user handle coming up anywhere on this forum except in this thread. And, while I'm not as frequent of a visitor to this forum as I am to others, it still seems that I would have noticed threads of this nature in the past, if they'd in fact appeared here.

Actually, they do test vehicles to complete destruction. They even drive them into brick walls. That's where safety ratings come from. I can bet you that more than a few Rams have been destroyed in the testing process.
