Green Beret

I am thinking about getting a GB. Do you guys know if there are any holes in the tang (drilled out for balance), or does anyone have a picture of it without the scales on it?

Gerberblades,

In answer to your question, sir, the individuals for whom this knife was originally designed...and still issued to...may just have a use for that at some point in their interesting careers. And I don't think they would mind if there was some minor chipping at the time. You can take care of that after you're back from your mission and doing your gear checks (team gear first, individual gear second, private gear third). Remember, this knife was not originally designed for those of us who take it camping to baton wood and such, although I am sure those things were considered in its design phase.

They are serving with distinction and under some heavy use at a number of locations around the globe as we speak, as the following capture from the National Geographic special "Inside the Green Berets" illustrates:

Thanks,

That is a cool pic. Thanks.

Hey, now that I have my sweet Green Beret, I am thinking about sharpening it. Anyone have info on what the edge angle is from the factory? I am wondering if I should grind a primary at 30deg and then use the Sharpmaker, or try going straight to the sharpmaker. Has anypone here sharpened one and if so, how did you do it?

Thanks,
-Ryan

PS....Love my Green Beret!

I've only used the 20 deg angle on the sharpmaker with mine. Depending on what kind of edge you want, if you run it down the white stones (corner and flats) it will shave hair. Typically you would not want that polished an edge on a knife this anyway.

I've read in the past CR uses 20-22 deg on his fixed blades. Both my GB and Mtn II have been sharpened at 20 deg on a sharpmaker. No complaints on the outcome.

CRK recommends a 40 degree Sharpmaker setting for the Sebenza. The fixed blades use a similar hollow grind. The secondary (edge) bevel on all of them is actually convexed.

Hey 6. Take it from a knife lover and soldier. I have both the 5.5 inch and teh 7 inch GB. I love them both. The 7 inch is a bit long, but it was designed to be. The 5.5 is perfect. I don't know what you do, but im currently deployed to Iraq on the Syrian border. My GB has held up fine. The only thing i have done is had a couple of custom kydex sheaths made. I havent received them yet, however when I do I will definitely use my GB even more.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply madborderman. I just sharpened my GB and it came out really nice. I was super careful with it while sharpening. Took me about 7 hours! I couldn't sharpen the knife using the Sharpmaker alone, so I rebeveled the edge to 17deg per side and then used the sharpmaker. Man, it came out really clean with very even bevels and the belly looks clean and mean with a slightly bigger edge to it. Its nice and razor-like now, along the entire length of the blade, including serrations and shaves effortlessly. Now touch ups will be a piece of cake.

it only has one visible hole for the lanyard at the very back of the handle...but you probly already know that. Maybe email Chris Reeve Knives and ask them if they have hidden holes.

I'm not a big fan of this style of knife anyway but It certainly wouldn't be my first pick as a Camp Knife as you mentioned you wanted one for. Maybe if I was going into battle behind enemy lines, but if I had this much to spend on a Camp Knife I would be looking at a Swamprat Ratweiler or their newer version of the same or maybe even a custom from Scott Gossman, even the RD line from Ranger knives would make far better Camp Knives !!!

Hey sorry bro, I just realised this is on the Chris Reeve Forum so maybe you'd better just ignore what I just said !!!

Green Beret looks way cooler than a Swamprat. Therefore, the Green Beret is a better camp knife. Get it?

For less than $50 you could have a kitchen knife from Ikea and a hatchet form Ace Hardware... and be more efficient in doing your camp chores than with just a Swamprat.

Serious, if it were about being practical or all about use, I would easily get by with a knife for less than 50 bucks. But we live in the land of excess! So, if I wanna whittle sticks, what the heck, why not buy a Green Beret!
