This afternoon my kids asked me to open a few green coconuts so we shot a video of how to do it.

Here at home I use a coconut tool. If I was headed to a wilderness area that had wild coconuts or I owned a yacht I would definitely take one along as it makes the job much easier. I also used the 14 inch Tramontina Bolo to split them, which is the main use for this blade in the Pict household. Mac

OPENING GREEN COCONUTS

Great video! Been quite a few years since I had to split a coconut (I was living in Holland at the time, about 7 years ago now) and my attempt certainly did NOT go as smoothly as yours did!

Thanks for sharing that!

Great instructional video. That tool looks really handy. Also your kids are super cute!

wow!
that sure looks better than how most people just stab it and turn it upside down so that it sprays everywhere except your mouth!
:D
thanks for the tips.
if I'm ever on a tropical island, I will be sure you use them.

lol
"we do actually feed them"
:D

Looks like a fun time.

How about those coconut sellers, usually older women, who whack a perfect cut in a green coconut with one hand, while holding it in their other hand?

Most times they are using a machete or large knife.

I am always impressed.

Great video and I love the bolo. I was using a Scrap Yard knife to tear in to a old coconut and a pineapple last week with out bating it. It's a real good knife to get into tough items but nothing beats Bolos IMHO.

Boy, its been years since I had a nice green coconut. When I lived back in Fiji, we used to feast on these all the lime. Very easy to open with a machete, or even knife for that matter. I used to just cut the bottom off, did the same thing with the spoon though.

Gyro5000 that's some nasty walmart looking coconuts if you ask me Bro! When you get a fresh one you'll puke thinking you 'knew' what a coconut tasted like. I used to have the trees in my yard along with a massive avocado tree, banana grove, papaya trees, mac nut trees, coffee trees, pineapples...NOTHING beats fresh!

Pict, I love that video. I'd have to drive South a few hundred miles to find green coconuts, though. Maybe I could just stroll along Miami Beach with a Bolo Machete. Maybe not.

That was an awesome video bro. Nice family you have there too!

thanks for that vid, mac, it's fantastic. :D you're one lucky sumbitch to be down there right now.

When it's hot we buy big sacks of green coconuts. They cost about 50 - 75 cents each. That little tool is the ticket. If I were to be so lucky to travel to some deserted island I would have one in my kit for sure. When I have to open five at a time for the whole family it makes the job go alot quicker. Thanks for watching. Mac

ETA - The cocnut in Gyro's post is a ripe coconut, the water in them is much stronger tasting and probably has a greater laxitive effect. You can't drink more than a few green ones in a day or you can get pretty loose. How much is too much? I don't know everyone seems to be a little differnt. I wouldn't hesitate to drink three a day, thats about 1.5 liters of really good stuff. Theeis noting better thanto stop off at a vendor on a hot day downtown and get a half liter of ice cold coconut water.

Pict,

Great vid, I can't actually remember that last time I tangled with a fresh coconut....
