Green Laser! Got one!

Back in January, fracmeister started a thread Green Laser! Got to get one! They cost too much then. I just got one now, the BTG-1 Green Laser Pointer.

Everything we said then is true. This is one spectacular little toy. Be careful where you point it -- you don't want to stare into a reflected beam! I could hardly wait till sundown. You really can see the beam, a green needle leading to a bright spot, even blocks away.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAHHH !!! THE FORCE IS WITH ME !!!

Mine was $140 with S&H, and he throws in two "bullet lasers" which are the old style red dot lasers with keychain attachment. Edmund Scientific still has the high prices. Some other suppliers are closer to Z-Bolt, but since they all seem to be distributing from the same manufacturers, I'm happy to pay the 'lower' price, especially since his (John Mueller's) service looks pretty good.

I also came across another dealer who does modifications like Z-Bolt, increasing the power. Increasing the price a good bit, too. If you want one of these for a toy (like I do :D) then I recommend a basic model until you get comfortable with the extraordinary capability of this technology.

I just got back inside from a stroll around the neighborhood in the cold and the dark. I can't say it enough, the beam from this laser is incredible. I got off one shot down a trail, and across a field, that must have been 1/4 of a mile, and it was precise and clear all the way. I believe the rating that indicates some two miles range.

It is really weird aiming it up and watching the beam glinting off dust in the air. I can't wait till we get some low clouds to shoot for!

The instructions say that certain conditions can inhibit the beam's strength temporarily, and I found that out walking along with this metal tube in my hand -- when it gets too cold, the beam fades quickly, but turning it off for a few moments restores it. Walking with it inside my glove kept it warmer, and eliminated the problem.

A quick note: these lasers are obviously sturdy, but they're not footballs. Some care is in order. I had a nylon belt sheath made for a mini-maglite lying around, and found it fits the laser perfectly, and pads it nicely. Smoky Mountain Knife Works carries them for a couple of dollars.

This is very true. One drop or hard knock can defocus a Greenie.
When they are warm, the Greenies tend to be brighter.

Warm usually isn't a problem here in the desert. :D

FWIW, I e-mailed the address on the z-bolt.com site. I asked what the difference between the lasers being offered now and the ones referenced in the older post.

The answer (received within an hour or two):
The BTG - 1 is the new designation for the BTS - 6. The dimmer model in the video clip is the BTG - 1. The brighter the MOD - 1.

I also asked about the video that they show on the page that gives information about the modified BTG-1. If the BTG-1 is the dimmer version, the MOD-1 must be off the hook.

Thanks for the heads up, I've been waiting for the price to drop on these.

Blinding far away animals? Waving it around like a lightsaber is an obvious use and probably the most fun. I'm not saying that they're dumb, or that I don't want one, but is there a real "killer app" useage for them?

Mabye at $99.00 I'd bite, but more than that for a lightsaber is too steep for me. But if I knew of an actual task that I might accomplish, it might be worth the extra investment.

The only "legitimate" use I can think of is as a pointer. But what can it point to that a red laser or a stick can't? Constellations ... stars. I want to see how pets react. I know they nut out over a red laser.

Now, when it comes to illegitimate uses, maybe I better not say! :D OK OK ... blinding tailgaters ... harassing civil aviation ... distracting the man at bat ... naahhh Don't try this at home, kiddies !!!

Seriously, you have to be careful with them, because they shoot that bright spot way beyond what you might expect, even in daylight. I don't think people would appreciate high-speed sabotage.

A playful Red dot on anyone's chest these days could probably be prosecuted as a terrorist threat. Somebody laid one on me a couple years ago and it did make my heart race. It turned out to be a couple kids with a laser pointer, but that's not what you think when you look down and see the red dot. With a green laser, there's a pointer leading directly back to your hand for all to see. While it looks cooler, a green laser seems like it could only get you into more trouble than a red laser. Distracting the man at the bat could be cool, or these days, it could be felonius.

Not that I still don't want one.

I bought one of these months ago and it is too cool!! I used the excuse that it would be an aid on my boat for identifying buoys or rescue. It worked great on buoys and thankfully I've not needed rescue!! Several of my friends immediately ordered one.

On a misty night or in fog it is weird, people around our marina were treated to a few "shows". Lotsa fun, not cheap, though.

It's the Holidays, guys, get yourselves a toy.

Awww CRAP!! There goes some more money that I should be using for Christmas (for other people). I need to have one of these. Dammit.

I take my Surefire out at night anyway! :D

I find indoors that shining the light on any light surface, let alone a reflective surface, can be almost blinding. Shining it on a darker surface like a carpet, I can actually see the beam in a room with the lights on. Tonight I took it out on the porch and shined it off into the sky with rain coming down. Neat sparkling effect. It still projects that dot for blocks.

ZENGHOST, take a deep breath and wait till after Christmas. The price may go down a bit more.

*sigh* I think I may have to, but my credit card literally jumped out of my wallet when I saw it. I've been thinking about it all day and I'll probably be dreaming about it tonight. *sigh*

So what do you guys think--is the Mod worth getting? Is that price they give an additional cost, or is it total (I think the price was $179).

Yes, the MOD is $179. The operating lifetime drops from 3000-5000 hours to 2000-3000 hours. The range increases from 10,500 ft to 16,000 ft. I looked over all their models and felt the BTG-1 was the best bang for the buck, but these aren't a rational purchase :D

I am impressed enough with the one I got. I haven't got the most out of it yet. I need more open space, and a dark, dark night.

I was looking at that too... loooks like the MOD costs @ $50 more, but you do get a 180 day warrant vs. 90 days for the other one.

2000 hours is still a LONG time. If you used it for an HOUR A DAY... if you weren't blind by the end of it, it would last over 5 years!

I don't know... after watching that video of the MOD vs. the BTG-1, I really wanted a MOD. But if you can see the beam (the coolest part) on the BTG-1, that does sound like the best bang for the $.

I may rig some kind of pistol grip for this. It's a lot of fun playing marksman wih it. Of course you can't see the beam in bright daylight, but you sure can see that big green dot across the parking lot!

The BTG-1 and all the others, too, I'm sure, is a little longer and a bit heavier than the cheap red dot lasers (that only cost 5 bucks :D ) and even the button is a metal ball, very classy, very positive action, and the pocket clip is strong.

It was very misty tonight on the way home from work. I was certainly lasing around and had both of my M6's out to shine too. In the fog I found that the MN21 produces too much glare back compared to the MN20.
