Green Laser! Got one!

Okay, I was as patient as I could be and then I just pulled the trigger over the weekend and ordered the Mod Green Laser ($192 w/shipping). I missed the UPS guy yesterday so I had to wait for it until today.

Problem is...I'm a bit disappointed. The green dot is a rather spectacular flash of green, but in a completely dark (windowless) room, I could only barely see the beam. It was nowhere near as intense as even the unmodified one was in the vid. Does it just need time to break in? I love the strength of the dot, but I bought it for the beam visibility, not the dot visibility. It seems as if everyone else seems to have a better result with their unmodified ones. Suggestions?

I will be emailing Z-Bolt to ask them about it...just wanted to wait until after I test it out tonight to see if there's any difference.

uhhhhhh
u know why people gripe about phaser beams in star trek?
because the beam is technically invisible
if you like, you can beat a rug in the room before using the pointer
the beam will be a lot more visible then
or try it when you have a lot of smoke

That I already knew, but the in the vid it doesn't appear as if there is any smoke in the room--it just looks like a dark room.

Where are these videos?? I combed the site with no luck

Here's the link to the vid: Here's the link to the vid...it's on the page for the "Mod Green Laser" about halfway down the page.

I may be changing my mind about being disappointed. It actually works a lot better outside because of all the stuff floating around in the air. Scared the hell out of a stray cat at work tonight. I'll play with it some more and re-evaluate it.

lol
i used to play with the underwater kinetics q40 in the armour vehicle training area
the dust there made it look like a lightsabre

ZENGHOST, I hope you have as much fun with yours as I still do! As far as seeing the beam, remember that it will show up better against a dark background. Indoors you may be getting glare off walls or lighter furniture. When I shine it up at the sky, I try to get the most cloudless area and it looks good, but against a cloudy background, no. Also, if you shine it against something light and reflective, the bright dot will blind you somewhat to the beam. Shine it against a dark, non-reflective carpet or blacktop and see.

It must be warm, so keep it inside a pocket next to you, not out in the winter air, and the diode itself must have warmed up! So when you turn it on, give it a few seconds to heat up the diode and fwooosh the beam appears!

It seems as if it works a lot better when I'm in a larger area--probably because of the glare off of the walls. I only went into that room because it was daytime and I wanted a dark area. Mine actually works pretty well against the clouds--might be due to the modified beam. What really impresses me is that I can see the dot on a building that's a good mile+ away from me. That was an unexpected bonus. The only thing is that when I shine it on something close to me, the dot is so bright that I can't tell if it's being reflected back at me or if the light is just that bright. Kinda spooky sometimes--I really don't want to damage my eyes.

This isn't usually too much of a problem in Hawaii--it's been colder this year than most, but generally speaking I don't think it will be a problem. I have been giving it time to warm up anyway, though.

I am having more fun with it now than when I first opened it. In fact, I keep thinking that I'm having way too much fun with it. I'm definitely going to hang onto it--at least for awhile. Thanks, guys.

Doug Ritter talks about green lasers as a possible rescue signalling device in a headline over at "Equipped to Survive": www.equipped.com . The article is called "Innovative Laser Rescue Flare Reviewed" and you have to go halfway down the article to the heading "How it compares" to find info on a green laser. The whole report is worth reading.

Thanks, man. Haven't had a chance to read it through, but it definitely looks like it's worth reading.
