In the early 1960s my wife's father found this Greenstone (Ponamu) axe in a creek on his farm. Obviously I don't know how old it is exactly, but would be hundreds of years.
That is a picture of the coolest hand axe ever in this forum. The name hand axe comes from this very type of axe and the earliest ones date back 7,000 years or more. Thanks for making my day.
These photos will give a better idea of size and shape. Very interesting to note the bevel on one side of the cutting edge is much greater than on the other. Some of the designs we still use have been around for a long time.
Wow, that's very cool Frank. It seems they were made as early as 1500 years ago from "greenstone" and traded widely. The greenstone was guarried from Mount William. Here are a couple of links http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/arch2.html
Hi Robin...That's interesting but this Item is from the south of New Zealand not Australia. I'm a 'Kiwi' not an Aussie.
A very easy assumption though. Just like someone from my part of the world mistaking you for an American. (We're all part of the commonwealth brother)
Thanks for interest and research.
