Khukuri FAQ

Bill,

Did Yangdu get the chang recipe when you guys were over there? I’d love to see the forumites' reactions in August to a nice warm cup of chang.

Once in the hills my friend and I were invited into a poor man’s hut for a cup of chang. My friend couldn’t stomach it and waited outside, but I had a great time drinking with the Nepalese gentleman who offered it.

Howard, Yangdu has tried a dozen times to make chang here and every attempt failed. She blames the basic ingredients. I blame it on her being a college girl who left the chang making to others in the household. If she ever reads this she will become angry so I post this at my own risk.

Actually, I much prefer Thumba to chang.

For the safety minded please note that Gosai is the only one opting for safety goggles.

Khukuri FAQ

Even the kid looks well dressed. I mean, he's wearing sandals instead of shoes, but what would be the point of shoes? He'd just grow out of them.

It's the custom in Nepal to remove shoes before entering the home and leave them at the door. Because of this many folks prefer to wear chopals (thongs or sandals) because they are easy to slip on and off.

Our kamis are probably the best dressed and best fed kamis in Nepal, something I am very proud of.

If possible, could you have Yangdu write down the recipe for chang and email me with it, I'd like to give it a shot...

BTW, did I mention that I brew real beer?

Thumba and chang. I NEED to know what they are though not sure I WANT to know what is in them.

Rusty, chang is a fermented beverage made in part from barley. I believe that there are other ingredients, but am not sure what they are currently.

One of the critical ingredients is, by some accounts, a yeast/fungus mixture that is not available in the US. Although, with HI, anything may be possible.

Well I am sure that if you go to a "Chinatown" In a major city you can find it, or at least a very close substitute.
