Greeting from Maine

Thanks again for all of the positive comments.

Will: It is great having Don close by. I took his Damascus class and it was fantastic. It is crazy to be able to bounce idea's off of a world class knifemaker.

Indian George: My Mom is from New Bedford and I get down there for business as well. I would love to see your shop.

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks Indian George,

Dogs and Parrots are cool with me. Of course my mom is Portuguese! I am thinking about Linguica pizza right now.

Nick,
Nice knives for sure. Welcome to the forums.
Warning: Beware of New Bedford knifemakers who offer you a touch of Heat Treat Relish.
That stuff is good, smells great, and is capable of removing the nerve endings any where it touches.

Sounds Great!

I am a "seeker" when it comes to hot food. I look forward to having my taste buds burnt off.

Hello Everybody,

I have been lurking for a few months and I thought I would say a little about myself and show off some of my recent knives.

I have been making knives for 12 years now. I primarily make fixed blades of all sizes. I forge and stock remove. Early on I was influnced my local makers Herb Kettel, Mudd Sharrigan and swordsmith Muh-Tsyr Yee. From there I was introduced to the works of Don Fogg, Tim Zowada and Jimmy Fikes. I worked at the Freeport Knife Company, Maine's largest cutlery store for 10 years. I currently teach a basic bladesmithing class at the excellent New England School of Metalwork with Herb Kettel. Last year I got a "real" job at an Engineered Textile Company, so that has put somewhat of a damper on my production.

Here are a few things I have just finished. I would love to hear any comments you might have.

Cheers,

-Nick

This is my own crushed W pattern damascus, 1030/1075/15n20. It also features a really purple sheath.

This is sort of smooshed jelly roll damascus, same mix. Copper and Pink Ivory with a carved ricasso.

This one is forged W-1 with temperline, cord, rayskin and a Ken sheath.

I think some of your best work is the hate you're spewing in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=685160

First he called my friend a douche bag, then he said he wanted me to die in a fire then he invited Snody supporters to come over here and criticize his knives. I felt obligated. :D

I am intrigued.

I never knew that Mike $nody had this "image" untill this thread. I appreciate that Mr. $nody is a sucessfull and prolific knifemaker. His knives seem to be well made and sturdy. The designs are not offensive but certainly not a big breakthrough in knife aethstetic.

But the image.....hmmm.....

You can look at this a few ways. The outrageous "gangsta" thing certainly sets him apart from other knifemakers. Typically knifemakers are middle aged, bearded and slightly paunchy. Mr. $nody's "street" schtick is in stark contrast. While that certainly will appeal to the 18-25 "urban" crowd, it is an embarrasment to just about everybody else. I can say with certanty that if I saw the you tube videos while in the process of deciding on a custom knife purchace, I would think;

Wow, what an incredible d-bag. I wonder what kind of boob would think that was cool. I am absoloutely going to tell several of my friends how much this guy seems like a wannabe contestant on a VH1 reality show.

Just sayn'.

I would like to restate the fact that I have not said anything negative about the construction or design of Mr. Snody's knives. In fact I complimented him on the comfort and sharpness of his work. I also at no point said that I was a "better" knifemaker.

You sir, are the one stating that Mike is a better knifemaker and insulting my work. You don't like my knives? That's just fine with me. Don't buy one.

I am talking about image and marketing. That is the focus of this thread. You are trying to devalue my opinion by attacking my knives.

For that, Die in a fire. :)

Wow!

I sure have pissed some people off! I would like to AGAIN say that I was commenting on his you tube marketing. I said he LOOKED like a d-bag. The responses in this thread prove that I am not the only one.

I have said nothing negative about the man's knives. I am sure Mike is a big boy and can take a little ribbing.

My opinion has been stated. If any of you would like to continue this discussion please PM me. Otherwise, I will be in the Makers Gallery. Feel free to crap on my knives there.

Cheers,

Nick
