Hello everyone. My first post! :)

I’ve only been playing around with knife making for about 2 months now so I’ll start off apologizing for my noobness. I’m currently working on my 4th forged knife now. Everything I’ve made thus far has been out of an old truck spring I had laying around. I’m assuming the steel I’m working with is 5160 based on what I’ve read.
The grinder I’m currently working with is a little crappy 1x30…though I am hoping to upgrade soon. I’ve found it pretty difficult to get the tang completely flat (and thus a tight fit for my scales) using the tools I currently have access to…which leads me to my question…

Is it possible/advisable to use wood veneer as a scale spacing material? I found a bunch of small pieces lying around my shop. If I'm reading my micrometer correctly, the stuff is about .025 in thickness which seems close what most of the micarta I'm seeing used is? I have a bunch of micarta spacers ordered than I plan on using for future projects but I'm itching to play with the knife I'm working on now.

I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere...I searched for about 20 minutes through the boards and didn't see anything on the topic. Much thanks for any help.

Thin wood is used by some folks just like vulcanized spacers or thin G-10 spacers. It will add a contrast stripe at the tang.

A thin piece of vaneer will work for contrast but won't help the fact that you tang is not flat.Get a piece of 1/4 plate glass or a granite plate and some 100 grit sandpaper and sand the tang flat.It won't take all that long and will make a huge differance in the fit and finish of your knife.Don't worry about getting the whole tang flat as long as you have an 1/8-1/4" all around the outside edge you will be good to go.

Awesome. Thanks for the suggestion SBuzek. I even have a piece of scrap granite to play with.
