i have boughteth the book of information by sir wayne, and have decided not to hande forge blades. The person who is teaching me is teaching me to make a knife,of mostly hand work, the tools of power that i used are a scrtoll saw to cut out a pattern of the blade out of ye olde lexan, then a band of saw to cut the blade out of metal, then i used a sander of belts and a disc sander to profile the steel, the rest is done with files, and paper of sand and any other hand tools. except a saw to cut out the handle, and a buffing wheel for the finishing touch.

and if i wanted to spend money, what are some tools that you would suggest?

i have hand files, a dual wheel kinda ok grinder, i have a router, a hand drill, bandsaw that is supposed to be for wood, a hand jigsaw, skillsaw, quick cuts etc and a small tablesaw and some angle grinders. i was thinking of a disc sander and a belt sander, or can you make suggestions or discuss what to use my exisiting power tools for? that would be great

now, please try to speek in ye semi old english

The message of preceeds hath been hastily typed, respond with steadfast recovery :footinmou haha, shoe

Ohhh, I meant use the tools you have to build a belt grinder, not convert them into one.

If you look at the pictures at the following item on EBay, you will have some idea what you need for a belt grinder. You need a roller for one end of the belt, and another on the motor end. Or you could buy the one on EBay.

DoAll Horizontal Belt Grinder/Sander EBay Item # 1921754934
Go to EBay.com and search on item number.

ok guys what i meant are, what are good tools, company and models that are inexpensive? i was thinking of a belt sander and a disc sander, like not a 2 wheel sandert, more maybe 3 with a small contact wheel in front

Armless,

I have the Sear's 1hp 2x42 belt/disc grinder (about $200 I think) and I get belts from Discount Abrasives and Supergrit. I'm quite happy with the setup.

It has enough HP to do anything and a good selection of belts, without the cost of a 'real' grinder. (I'm still saving up for my Frink machine!)

They have a 1/2 HP that might work too, but I liked the big heavy one.

I went to the Sears site to get the current price and its gone! It was a stocked item. Better run to the sear's store and see if they still have one.

Things that would have been nice would be 2x72, variable speed, reversable, ... but then you are back to the Frink machine $$$.

I did look at all the 4x36 machines out there. Might work, but not built nearly as well and people tell me that 4" isn't the optimum width.

This machine was the best compromise between $$ and knife building. The next $ figure up I suppose would be the Grizzly at double the price.

Hope that helps.

Verily, Verily, Verily I say unto thee wither armless or legless thee be. A smithy you can be. But beware of the tooleth called the scrotal saw as I see nothing but demise in that direction.

ah tj, the mishappen is my, i meant to speak to thee ripper, i bite my thumb at thee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, im logging in from someone elses computer, so i am not sure if this will work completely.

and this is not in semi old english because i am extremely rushed.

this is for jens anso: do you by chance have plans for your micro grinder? it looked pretty sweet. and what belts does it use? how powerfull is the motor etc etc.

I have no plans and plans would do you no good as I build the thing from stuff I had around.....designed it over the things I had. I used a sewing machine motor....way underpowered but it did the work untill I got something better. What you need is small wheel with bearings (rollerskate, skateboard etc are usuable...!) a large spring, some knid of motor and some imagination.....just do it!

As my main grinder is 2"*72" (actually its more like 78"...thats standard in DK ...72 is standard in the US...) I made it to accept 1"*72" so I could just split the belts I had on hand.....
