Folks,

Got a Combat Special from Greg Covington last week. Like it very much! :D Is similar to the one in the following link: www.covingtonknives.com/gallery2.htm. Has a neat looking and comfortable green micarta handle. With the guard, bump after the index finger, and grooves perpendicular to the axis of the blade, feels very secure. Also feels good in a reverse grip. Blade is 8” of Parkerized 1084. There’s a ½ inch notch, which Greg told me is called the ricasso, between the guard and the start of the cutting edge. Greg would have sharpened the false edge, if I requested it.

Haven’t used it to cut various materials yet, but it moves well cutting air with the x, cross, stab 12 action FMA drill, two Sayoc Kali sets, and some free form moves. Practicing with this knife seems to speed up my ability to perform the moves with my edc of < 4”.

Came with an OD green Eagle sheath lined with kydex. Allows the knife to be inserted so that you can wear it on your left or right side for either regular or reverse grip draw. Thus, gets a lefty friendly rating.

Was a pleasure to deal with Greg. He cheerfully and competently answered a number of questions that I had. Even took a check. Price was reasonable for a custom knife of this quality and size.

If you are looking for a “combat” knife of this size, definitely check it out. You can e-mail Greg at the following: gcovington@woh.rr.com (this is now the correct address).

P.S. Greg also makes a neat looking Combat Warrior model that has some resemblances to a fixed blade “Hobbit”. Check it out: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=219599

I have one of Greg's earlier Combat Specials and I agree it is an extremely well thought out design.

I did a brief review of the knife in what is now the custom knife forum archive - you can see it here

Now, since this thread is in the GBU forum, I'll point out that Greg is a really great guy to deal with. That said, I almost think this would be more appropriately placed in the reviews or custom knife forum...

I have an 8" Combat Special. Does anyone know what happened to this knife maker? Seems like he disappeared from the knife scene... Also, can anyone remember which issue of Fighting Knives Magazine his knife was featured in?
