I finally got my old DANKRE German kitchen ax hung after owning the head for a couple of years. This thing is a spitting beast. The head is 800 grams and over 3/4 inch thick in front of the eye and a 3 3/4 inch edge. I hung it on an 18 inch stick. Here's a couple of pics if it in action splitting nice dry Cherry.

Best regards

Robin

Greta seems to be a fine german girl! ;)

I like the shape very much. The pretty short handle makes it good for firewood-splitting, imo. Thank you for sharing this nice lady. Though I don´t know, if spitting beasts can be called "ladies" ;)

Kind regards
Andi

Very nice. The shape is similar to an HB.

How does that dry cherry split? I've always found that the green cherry splits best if you score the bark.

Hi Andy, Greta reminds me of some of the very strong women I met who were riding the beer wagons at Octoberfest in munich years ago ;-))) I put the shorter handle on her because Dankre describes it as a kitchen ax, I assume for splitting kindling. I almost put a long handle on it because the head shape will split much bigger pieces than kindling.
I tried to find some info on the Dankre company but all I could find was a retailer who sold the new ones which seem very inexpensive. This head is very well made, if the new ones are the same they would be a great deal. I wasn't able to find anything about the company so have no idea how long they were in business, making it hard to date it.

What makes this a kitchen axe?

Hi Triq
I found a link to a retailer in Germany (maybe Cegga sent it to me) who sells new Dankre axes, they describe the 800 gram head as a kitchen axe. It IS a great splitter for much bigger stuff than kindling. Kindling splitting is effortless, I think their name for it is appropriate.

Just playin! 800 grams seems light for a splitter.

Hey Cattledog
It's really light for a splitter and I think it was meant for kindling. The shape just goes through Cherry and hard Maple like butter. A three pounder with this blade shape would be a wicked splitter for big stuff. Using this size of head for big wood splitting pretty much means lots of over strikes.

Robin

Maybe they like chicken?

:D My bet is if it was in the kitchen it was used for chickens too.
It split the Cherry wood with one strike, like butter. The wood has been drying for about a year. I have 100s and 100s of Black Cherry trees on my land all with burls all over them. As soon as I get a vacume bottle made I'll be cutting a bunch of the burls into knife scales, pretty stuff.

She's a mean looking mongrel. Exactly what's needed at the wood-pile.

OY Frank, She is a mean little axe. Just this morning I found your last two Emails in my junk mail:rolleyes: I'll reply to them shortly, hotmail seems to be making decisions for me lately ;-((

Best regards

Robin

I love the kitchen axe! In fact I love the whole kit you showed. It looks like you are ready to head into the hither land for a long stay Bro. That cherry will make some great scales. Let us see them when done.
