Have never ground a blade in. When watching videos of people grinding a profile the edge is facing or going against the direction of the belt. Is this the common method of grinding a blade?
I assumed you would grinding the edge with edge facing the direction of the belt.

Most of us grind edge up because we want to see and control edge thickness. You want the belt running away so steel dust isn't coming straight at your line of sight.

I do occasionally grind edge down especially when thinning the edge. I always do when sharpening.

One tip is to use an old belt and cut in a 45 on the edge with the edge down when starting your grinds. The 45 degree angle you cut in won't knock the grit off your newer belts when you get to pushing the bevel up and doing the main grind.

One of the grinding videos out there, Johnny Stout ? grinds one edge up, one edge down to keep the handle on the same side to account for handedness.

Pick what you like and do it.

It makes sense to me to see the edge.

I grind tip up with the belt moving towards me. I sharpen tip up with the belt moving towards me. I can see as much as possible this way.

There are really no hard rules on how to make a knife except to make the very best you can!
As mentioned, find what works for you.

I originally ground with the tip against belt rotation because I was told it compressed the molecules into the edge; something I now believe to be false. I still grind this way because I'm familiar with it and can see the blade better.

I was just saying what was typical, whatever works is the best. :)

Sometimes swedges work well edge down for me...
