I have a Sears 2X42 belt grinder as my first grinder. have added a ceramic platen, which makes a huge difference. With forum member input I have been able to greatly improve my flat grinding and plunge cuts to the point that I now feel at least a passable grade in the grinding area. To this point I have been using the Sears belts in 120 and 50 grit.

Since I am not an expert I do not know what to expect in the way of performace from the Sears belts, but my suspicion is that they are poor performers.

Can you all give some input as to what brand of belt, grinding media and grit I should be looking to buy to optimize belt performance and the longevity of the belts.

For that size go to Supergrit.com and pick up a variety of grits. They have decient Norton belts at a good price. Pop's also have a small variety of Klingspor's.

Read through the site for information on how the belts are intended to be used and at what speeds. That will make a difference, also talking with one of their sales reps may help you make a better choice in belts.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the sites and links recommended. I am really excited as my ginding has taken a quatum leap this last week. I feel with some better quality belts I will be able to speed up my grinding and hopefully improve my work product.
