I would like to build a variable speed 2x72. As far as I know I only have access to 115v power in my garage. Am I limited to a 1hp motor? I am assuming this isn't enough power.?

I own motors and 2 x72 machines that run on 115v rated to deliver up 2 hp.

I am not a electrician, but I have been told that 1 1/2 hp is the most efficient and if you want to go over 2 hp it pays to move to 220v if I remember correctly?

A 1 1/2 hp Variable at 115v has been the standard on top shelf grinders like Burr King & Hardcore for many years and you are starting to see more machines coming with 2 HP.

You can get by with 1 hp, but If you can afford it, get a 1 1/2 variable speed motor for your grinder build.

If you use a kb electronics vfd, kbac27d

That will give you one and a half HP, on 110 input

I know of no other vfd that does this.

Thanks for the info. DIY Grinder is getting pricy:( it looks like a 1hp will be half the price.

"As far as I know" is not good enough. I'd make SURE you can't get 220V power in there. You could get a 2hp TecoFM50 for like $160 and be in business if you can get 220V power to it.

ya. that would be nice. our dryer hook up is in there but its hard to get to and i don know if i could switch the power back and forth or my wife if i forget. i dont even know if that is what i need. i dont know about electric stuff.

I think you can run a 1 1/2 HP on a 15A 110V circuit. I believe my 1 1/2 is drawing 7.5 A off of my 220. I have a 30' extension that doesn't even get warm. You might have to wire up a special extension cord, but you can easily run a 2HP off of a 220 dryer plug. Heck a 3 HP should be no sweat.

Do you own your home? Even if you don't, you might ask the landlord if it's okay to have a 220v outlet installed. It's not that expensive to have an electrician install an outlet, especially if your service is in or near the garage. Why not get what you need instead of trying to make do?

I would suggest that you either buy or check out from your public library a book about electrical wiring basics. You will need to educate yourself a bit about electricity anyway if you plan to build your own VS grinder. Try to find a book that includes basic motor hookups.

Once you've read about and have a good understanding of these basics you will be able to figure out what you have, and what you need. If you don't want to do that (it's not that hard) I'd suggest picking the brain of some acquaintance who ACTUALLY knows what they're doing about your specific situation. (As opposed to the many guys out there who only SAY they know what they're doing!)

If you've got 220 for your dryer, already in that room, I'd advise that you don't shoot yourself in the foot by not taking advantage of it.

In the end, it's just a good thing to know a bit about wiring, anyway.
