Got a fusion huck fin a little while ago and there's some kind of defect in the fin. Is this what's called a grinder gremlin? I thought it was bent at first but it's not. Might this be covered under warranty?

If it is a comp finish blade those types of marks are normal.

That actually looks like the correct angle and shape to me. The mark is probably nothing. I can pull mine tomorrow and look, but I think you're good. is the fin sharp? not razor, but just enough to nip you?

I dont think its any kind of defect at all. Its a tool mark just like all other comp finish blades show. I wouldn't worry about it nor bug busse about it.

Gotcha. It just seems like a pretty aggressive tool mark and makes it look bent while in hand.

The top of the fin or the point? Top no, point yes.

looks like a comp finish mark, IMHO

I love the random tool marks of CF, but the ones that look "out of character" bug hell outta me.

That mark triggers my OCD in at least 3 ways:

1. It's deeper than the other tool marks
2. It's about 45 degrees out of phase with the really nice crosshatched marks on the flats
3. It's located on an area of high visual interest

Every time I'd pick that Huck up, if she were mine, my eye would be attracted to that tool mark like a hog to swill.

You need to sell it so you don't obsess over it...I'll do ya a solid and take her off yer hands for fiddy dollars and I promise to beat her on her naughty tool mark every day!!!

Haha yup, you hit the nail on the head with all of that besides the fiddy dollars part :p

I'll just have to only look on that side haha

So what's a grinder gremlin then?

Don't mean to sound negative. I think its o line like the ones on this fmv14. Its just that the fin is cut out of this.

Haha Petey I think that actually looks pretty cool, like it's supposed to be that way. Looks like a Richter scale, call that one the Earthquake!

Yup that one's so extreme it does transcend the ordinary ugliness, I agree, and takes on a character all it's own.

But like I said, the gremlins pop up more on 101 & 77 than INFI.

I would say the mark on the fin is more than a comp finish mark, because it appears on an area that had been highly ground, so I would call it a mistake. Give Busse a call and see what they can do.

Step 1....plug in angle grinder.
Step 2....lock Huck down in vice.
Step 3....well you see where I'm going and what I'd do....that Huck doesn't need a fin....lol

Honestly, since all my Busse's are users, I'd do what zimbieassassin is saying. I'd take a grinder and grind the fin off even with that line. To me, I think it would look even better.

I am with the others here. I wouldn't grind it off,I would use a file and take that point off. Blending it into the shape of the rest of the spine. IMO it would look much better than the pointy fin.

Yeah, file would probably be better. But would take a LOT longer, I believe. I don't think a file cuts INFI very well.

If your going to modify the blade to fix the issue, why not let Busse do it? It’s worth asking the question. Worst they say is live with it. At that point grind or file it yourself.

From my limited experience and what I have heard, Busse would take care of the problem to the buyer's satisfaction.
.

Gremlins are more common on Dogs & Rats and Busses in sr101&77 than they are on INFI Busses...
clampdaddy's pic...
here's an extreme case...
IIRC, his was a Dub talon BM in sr101, FWIW

Sanding those out was a bear of a job. Lol! After that one I learned that if take you a coated knife into a really dark room and shine a flashlight across the blade at just the right angle, the gremlins will usually show themselves.
