Hi,
I've been building a 2x72 grinder for about a month now. Just about got her done, however I'm having some trouble with the tracking. I can't seem to get it set in it's sweet spot. It moves when I change speeds etc. I'm wondering if my tension spring has enough tension in it to keep the belt good and tight. Anyone else have similar issues? Any suggestions? Any help is appreciated. Anxious to get grinding.

Thanks

More tension is usually the answer, try moving the toolbar out more.

Since this is a new build, check if the centerline of the wheels all line up.

Did you get the vertical plate absolutely, positively, perfectly perpendicular to the base plate? If it's off even just a little, tracking will always be a challenge.

Go to Home Depot or lowes. In hardware section they will have a spring...you want the 69lb one.

That will take care of it.

It looks like this

Thanks for the reply's. I forgot to mention I am very new to the knife making world. I didn't even think to try moving the arm out some. I'll give that a shot. If that don't work I think I will go with a gas shock.
Again. Thank You.

Moving the arm out on the GIB won't help IMO unless you are adding the gas strut. Doing so now with the already underpowered rear spring will decrease leverage and cause even more problems.

A quick trip to the hardware store for a $2 spring should do nicely. I have a GIB and had the same problems. Good luck.

Edited to add... Moving out the arm does help with tracking if you have enough spring tension or a gas strut. I added a gas strut to mine.

Let me just add this. My grinder in the pict above....tracks perfectly and I can make fine small adjustments to tracking.

The heavier spring did the trick. Thanks for everyone's help. Now on to practicing the grind.:)

I'm having the same problem. Just finished building my GIB this month. I'll have to make a stop by home depot and try that spring. I've been lucky as I live a couple miles from Beaumont Metal Works so sourcing the parts was easy.
