Still needs a few attachments but it should help me until I can get a KMG.

Thanks for looking.

It looks much better now. I think the way its set up now would be perfect for rough out and small wheel hollow grinding

Thanks Bruce. It was originally built as a sander for armour pieces (medieval) hence the large slack belt (with platen removed). But the knifemaking bug is getting the upper hand. ;)

I will post plans on my website in a few weeks. Maybe not detailed instructions since I sucked at those but a general idea might save time for those wanting to build something similar.

Now on to the work rest and flat platen.

By the way, drive wheel and 4" contact wheel is from Beaumont.

No Bruce, I put it there for the photo and did not look at the direction. The grinder runs the other way.

But since you ask, how do you know the direction when there is no arrows on there? Is it with he writing? I've been wondering about that for a while.
And what can running a belt the wrong way do? Not that I do this of course. ;)

Thanks

If there are no arrows it doesnt matter which direction it turns. I sometimes run mine backwards before I throw them away, it seems to have some aggresive action again for a short time at least.

I think the splice has something to do with the direction but I dont know for sure.

Darn Pad, you're not far from a KMG with what you have there!
Get some 1/4" plate aluminum and make a platent and a slack belt attachment and get a 10-12" contact wheel and make a stock rest and you're doin fine!!!

Thanks for the tip Bruce.

L6, that is the plan (of course the plan never works :() with maybe a small wheel attachment that I will probably end-up buying from Beaumont.

I was thinking more of an 8" wheel. I haven't done much research yet about wheel size so I am not sure.

yeah thats what you say:D:thumbup:

Would you mind showing a photo of your engineering on the tracking device??
I'm not too fond of mine - works OK on the square wheel flat platten. But, I can't get the belt to stay on when I switch to my small wheel attachment. I haven't gotten a larger contact wheel yet.

Thanks,
Jacque

Here's a pic of it.

Tell me if it's not clear but it is pretty simple.

Disclaimer: No engineers were harmed in the building of this grinder. ;)

Thanks for sharing. It appears that you tracking wheel moves in a perpendicular motion, the top/bottom tilting left to right. Am I correct?? I couldn't get mine to work that way and re-designed it to move horizontally; the front/back moves left to right. I have noticed that pictures of KMG's, Bader's, etc. are positioned such that one cannot 'see' how their tracking devices work. And, I have never seen one first hand.

I think you should send that to me and Start over LOL That looks great and gonna make some good knives with it.

Thanks Larry, I'll just make a couple of knives first to make sure it works right before sending it. ;)

Jacque, not sure what you mean. The screw you see pushes down on the bar holding the wheel. Do you have any picture of your grinder/tracking mechanism?

Pad

Sure - here's the tracking device. Where yours pushs up/down, mine pushs/pulls left/right. Added a few other views - hope you don't mind.

Are you kidding? I love tool pics. :D Thanks for sharing.

You've got some ingenious stuff there. Not sure why the tracking doesn't work? Do you have enough crowning in the wheel?

I am curious, did you build your small wheel att., wheels included?

Pad

Well, let's see if I can remember. The small wheels (1/2" and 1") are from Bader. Rob at Beaumont made all the other wheels. He was designing the KMG about the same time I was designing this one, 7 years ago, and I had sent him some photos. I seem to remember discussing crowned vs flat with him and I went with flat. That could be my problem. I made the whole thing (excluding wheels and motor) using a metal cutting band saw, a Delta 1x30 woodworking belt sander and a little Delta drill press and hand tools. Here's a better picture of the small wheel. The wheel is held in with a piece of duct tape until the belt takes over that job.

There's also a work rest for the square wheel but it didn't get into any of the pictures.

I just went and measured. My tracking wheel is 2.25x3.0 and flat. The ones Rob sells today are 2.2x3.5 and crowned. I remember now, we discussed that. and I forgot about it. I'm getting ready to buy a mill and a lathe in the next several months. I will either buy a new wheel from him or take a crack at making my own.

Jacque.

Here's the tracking wheel adjustment system on my KMG clone. It's the same as Rob Frink's machine. Really simple arrangement made from 1/2" CRS.

WHOOPS! Guess I can't post pictures.

Here's the site for the pictures if you want to see them
