Sorry guys I dont have a search function on here, I'm sure this was discussed before.

I am going with a Coote belt grinder, but don't know what motor to pickup for it.

I was wondering if you guys can tell me what to look for in a knifemaking grinder motor, for example RPM, single or 3 phase, etc.

If you guys could suggest some quality motors that will over me some good bang for my buck that would be great. For example Grizzly sell tons of motors with different options for cheap, but are they qaulity?

Only 2 conditions is I want to use pulleys (so no expensive variable speeds :grumpy:) and I want to use a standard outlet.

Thanks fellas!

Get a 2hp single phase that can be wired for 120or240. I had a grizzly motor and it worked good for me. I got a 1hp though and wished i had gotten 2.

A 1.5 HP US made motor is about the biggest you'll get off a 15A outlet. That works out to about a 5 HP Chinese import motor.

I have a marathon 1.8 HP motor that works fine off a 20A breaker and is rated for 15A max. It's 3450 rpm I believe, it has a wonky base, but I believe you could purchase a base for it that cradles it or work something out, if you cut off the old mount.

It's off my air compressor, but it's basically brand new only got an hour or so on it.

If you cover shipping and a few bucks for handling you're welcome to it.

Otherwise I'd say look for a Baldor or Lesson 1-1.5HP single phase motor.

I recommend a VFD for a soft start feature, but it's not necessary and it boosts the price quite a lot, it's basically the variable speed option and requires a 3 phase motor IIRC.

I have a baldor 1 HP and it works for me :) Can be wired for 110 or 240. I run fairly slow and that's as small as I'd go, though.

1.5 is nicer, of course. And as was indirectly mentioned- if it's an import motor, check the amps and don't trust the labelling.

I own a 2 x 48 coote and it takes alot to bog down my 3/4 h.p. baldor 1725rpm single phase. pulley ratio is about 2-1 small pulley on the motor. The table that comes with it is not suited for knife grinding. I did a little tweaking on mine. If you go to my website and look up new machines there's a good picture. If you have any further questions feel free to e-mail or call. Its a good little grinder.
