Hi guys,

I have this Grizzly H5379 1 HP TEFC 1725 RPM motor which I have been using for about 4 years. Tonight I turned it on and noticed it sounded a bit weird and very loud....then all of the sudden POOF! like some junk (which appeared to be white) puffed out of the motor's larger capacity cover.

Is this common after several years of use? The Larger capacitor says

SSEC - Motor Starting Capacitor

there was also some white junk after the capacitor ate it. What is that stuff? Almost looked like Grease...hopefully not toxic!

I'm assuming if I replace that capacitor the motor will be up and running again?

Thanks,

Pohan

Since you said the motor was making a strange noise, I would guess that you have a problem with your centrifugal switch. This switch takes the capacitor out of the circuit once it gets up to speed, if the switch doesn't open it will cause the cap. to fail. You may need to take the motor apart and see if the switch is locked up.

Take care

Thanks Charles!

Da switch appeared to be fine as everything else in the side behind the motor's fan. The windings on the other hand, can't seem to get the stinking screws off to see the other side!

Could be just the capacitor died! The cpacitors jobs is to kick in an extra jolt of juice to get the intial speed up on the motor. That could be the strange noise (the motor was not coming up to speed) and the capacitor failed at that point. The white junk inside is designed to melt in case of failure!

An electric motor shop may very well have another capacitor the right size to replace that one!

i'm liking the sound of that more! will go look for a capacitor tomorrow! Thanks for the replies guys!
