Hello,

I was browsing around Craigslist for some tools and such, and this popped up in my area:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/tls/3563650920.html (Still somewhat new around here, I'll delete the link if links to Craigslist are not allowed)

I have been considering buying a 2x72 grinder, so it piqued my interest. Biggest worry I have off the bat is the 1 HP motor. I have heard to get a minimum of 1.5-2HP, and I'd rather not spend all that money and want to upgrade the motor. Outside of that, I liked the Horizontal option and KMG type tool arm, and the price seemed decent for whats included, but I am a lot less familiar than most.

Anyways, was wondering if anyone had any input on whether this looks to be a decent deal that I should look further into, or should I hold off and save for something more tried and true like a KMG?

Thanks!

While it looks well made, it appears to have some problems for knifemaking. The horizontal position does nothing as shown, and that work rest system looks useless. There appears to be no way to change tooling for different heads, like small wheels, etc. The price seems high for what it is. The add says Burr King, but as far as I can tell it is a fancy home built grinder.

Hmm... well, I suppose I should take a pass on it, then. Figured it was worth looking into, as it is within my price range and I could pick it up and avoid shipping costs, but for that amount of money I would probably prefer to get something a little less unknown. Every 2x72 looks a enticing when compared to my 1x30, so I appreciate the input :)

Thanks!

Go take a look at it and see how it is built. If the guy can show you some features that don't show in the photos, and you can get it for $1000, maybe it will be OK.

I just saw that it says it has a flat platen and small wheel arm. That is a plus if they seem solid and easy to use.

My concern on the work rest is the round rods are long and would seem to move easily with any pressure on them. Keeping things lined up would be hard.

If thats in your range, a KMG, Pheer or NWG kit with 3-speed pulley (same as listed) is in your price range brand new.

True. What made me consider it was the horizontal positioning and attachments (so long as they were included). I'll probably give the guy a call and possibly take a look at the thing, but unless it really impresses me, I think I'll take a pass.

I would personally suggest a grinder in a box from polar bear forge. Are there some things I would like to change...Sure but the bang for your buck is pretty awesome. And you might be able to find someone to help you that has already made one...:D:D:D

You are welcome to come on down to the western burbs and check out the one I made! I have about $1200 with KMG made wheels (Drive, tracking, and 2" wheels), a Nathan the Machinist flat platten with water cooled option (WAY COOL! he sold out of them really quick though), KMG small wheel attachment, and a VFD. Defiantly put some money towards a VFD!! It is SO NICE to be able to change speeds on the fly and have almost infinite adjustment.

Send me a PM if you are interested in stoping by.
