While searching for simple disk sander plans, I stumbled on this library of grinder pictures.

Lots of really cool pictures of disk grinders, horizontals, surface grinders, ghetto set-ups, etc.

How about this for a surface grinder?

EDIT: At least I think that's for surface grinding?

I'd say it is, nice he makes it adjustable to level the stone, would be cool to put a contact wheel on there and make the Grindomatic9000

Shoot, looks like there is enough clearance on the surface grinder to do anvil faces! Cool little home set-up.

That site has some interesting pics for sure................. The 3"X 21" belt sander conversion was very interesting. I've been thinking of doing something similar with a Rigid oscillating belt sander which can be had for like $200 at Home Depot.

Definitely some cool stuff on there. Amazed at the ingenuity of some people. I am stealing some ideas for sure :) Thanks for posting the link Don!

I HAD THE WRONG LINK IN THE OP POST THE WHOLE TIME! LOL.

This is something I'm looking to make soon. Would be really helpful to get things flat, and also speed up sanding.

Hey, that's my hand in the photo. I have upgraded my horizontal disc to variable speed since that photo wastaken, but that set-up worked well for many years.

The set up used a 1700 RPM motor with a 1 1/2 ' pulle on the motor and an 8" pulley on the shaft with the disc.

Take care

Charles

Hey, cool! Thanks Charles.

With that setup, did you find that it ran slow enough so there wasn't much heat build up (and also not capable of launching things into the wall, etc)?

Don,

This set up was slow, on the verge of being to slow. You could work guite awhile before things got to hot to hold. Not much danger in throwing anything (as long as you have a good hold on it).

I posted about this grinder in another thread I think. Here is a video on it.

I had the exact type setup as the disc above before I got my VS discs. I had an 8" pulley
on the disc and a 2" on the motor so 4x reduction of motor speed, worked great. I have
since mounted my VS discs where the disc is vertical, I can see what I'm doing better looking
down at the edge.

I have a variable speed horizontal - I don't use it as much as the 2x72, but it is great when needed.

I haven't had anything other than dust get thrown around the shop.

Here is another site I was browsing through for grinder stuff. Awesome info in the CNCCookbook, including a WIP for a disk sander.

Also, I've posted about this Wilmont grinder before, but it looks stunning. The build looks straight forward as well. I'm wondering if it would be a feasible option to consider if designing and building one from scratch?

Or something like this Dozier grinder?

EDIT:

Looking through the gallery I originally posted, there are a lot of interesting grinders I haven't seen before.

Charles, looks like you were a little over 300 RPM? I have a pulley set up to my disc and it is just over 1000 RPM. I would love a variable, but I like this for a single speed.
