When i start using high grit belts i get a bouncing effect where the belt is mended together. How do i fix this. Im assuming its because there is no backing on the belt and its hitting against my platen.

You are correct, the joint will bounce. Different belts may bounce less. Try applying different pressure, different belts, or different belt speed and different belt tension. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS, but I have heard of people putting a piece of srcap leather on the platten to lessen the bounce. Not sure how long this would last or what detrimental affect it would have if it comes loose. If you try the leather I would suggest lite tension and fairly slow belt speeds. The other option is to work on the contact wheel (assuming it is rubber).
Hope this helps.
