Okay so I have a 2x42 Craftsman that I only use for the handles thus far, and I think I want to start using it on my knives versus filling. I do not have enough money saved up yet for a knife grinder and can't see being able to save it up anytime soon. I get that it is fast and requires a light touch due to it's speed heating up the blade. I have been looking on True Grit at the belts and I am not entirely certain what I should get any advice on the belts, and tips on using the little sander would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Matt

My method for grinding on a fast grinder is to skip the rougher grits and go straight to the finer grits

ie

profile with 120 instead of 60

bevel grind at 400 with no rougher steps

I've been using the Norton Blaze orange belts and a very light touch with both the 1x30 and the 6x48. Both of these run fast and will over heat the edge quickly if the belt is dull, if I'm being to agressive or if I don't dip the blade very often.

The Craftsman is fine at lower grits, TBH. You just have to concentrate and be aware that you are hogging some serious steel, fast. Higher grits get real hot, real fast, since they dull quicker at higher SFM. I have the 1x42 craftsman. I use the ceramic 50 grit belts from supergrit for my main hoggers. Prices are reasonable, and huge selection to choose from, gritwise.
