Hi guys. Not new to knifemaking but new after a 7-8 year lay off. I used to be a regular here about 12 years ago under a different name. I forgot that name so i signed back up. I am planning on getting fired back up for at least one knife. I want a new hunting knife for myself and don't like whats currently offered on the market thats not made in china. So there was only one option. Make my own lol. So i got to get new lights in my shop as they are all busted and not working. It has been quite a few years. I will need to buy new grinder belts and as of yet still cannot decide whether to buy a bar of 0-1 and do what i did best and that was stock removal or the other option which is to fire up my old freon keg forge and use an old coil spring coil i got that still has the factory paint on it. As far as my grinding goes....I have 2 grinders a 1x30 and a 2x72. My knife is gonna be a 4" or shorter blade of about 7/64" thickness. I was contemplating not even firing up my 2x72 and just buying a batch of belts for my 1x30 for all my grinding. I have never used my 1x30 for a complete knife b4. I will probably buy one belt for my 2x72 for contouring and profiling.

So tell me guys....Will my 1x30 be ok for the complete grinding process (minus profiling) before and after the heat treat? Going for a user not a show knife. This knife will get used and I prefer thinner blades that have a little (but not too much) flex to them.

My vote is to use 2 x 72 grinder for the whole deal and do what you did best, stock removal using the 01.

I agree why waste your time with a 1x30 ? If you have a 2x72 why not use it.

I was thinking maybe 1x30 belts would be alot cheaper is why and the fact that I was mainly doing shorter thinner skinning style blades the 1x30 would be perfect. But the 2x72 is probably the way to go. Both are homemade grinders from old exercise bikes and electric motors. The 1x30 was my handle shaper and stuff like that. It sure worked well.

Is Dave larsen still on these forums? He is a great guy and made a knife for me once by request. Last time I seen him he came down to my house and we had a forging party trying our hand at forging steel cable. That was many years ago.

Yes Dave is still around. Doing well the last time we spoke. He hangs out on Knife Dogs these days.
