what size grinding wheel would I need to use to hollow grind folding knife blades 8 10 14? Sorry about the dumb question I just don't won't to purchase something that I can't use.

Does anyone have a chart to use? which wheels will do what. Anyway I would like to make folders with blade width around one inch or less, blade thickness 1/8. Sounds like I will have to purchase one and figure out what works.

thanks

A 14" wheel on 1/8" stock will let you hollow grind a 0.9" tall grind with a 0.020" edge.

A 10" wheel on 1/8" stock will let you hollow grind a 0.78" tall grind with a 0.020" edge.

A 8" wheel on 1/8" stock will let you hollow grind a 0.72" tall grind with a 0.020" edge.

Hope this helps! :)

P.S. 10" is a good compromise, you can get a 1" tall grind with thicker stock 5/32" (with a 0.020" edge). Basically, thicker the stock, taller the possible grind with a fixed wheel diameter. Good luck!

There is a little slide panel chart that shows you the exact hollow with a visual representaion for each size wheel/thickness of metal. I think the knife supply places should have em. I never liked the dang things cause they make me want to go buy 12 contact wheels, then a few serrated ones and a few low durometer ones, lol.

You can figure all that out pretty easily with a compass and a straight edge.
You can draw up different configurations according to the stock you're using and how you want the blade to look.
All part of the design process. You can get different grinds with any wheel you use by moving the stock up and down, not just across .
