Hey guys I am making a few grinders and would like to know what speed motors you are using in your KMG's, KMG clones etc.
Should I order 1725 or 3450 in the speed dept.
BTW I am going to get a 3 phase motor and use VFD to make it variable speed.
Thanks for any insight you might have in this area.

I'm running a 3600rpm 2 hp 3 phase motor. With the versatility of the KMG/cloan design, it really doesn't matter too much as you can match the driven sheaves on the motor/driveshaft to acheive whatever driveshaft rpm you desire.

Yea good point I had not thought of different gear ratios if I needed to.

Rob Frink recomended the 1725 to me when I purchaced mine years ago.

I believe the 1735 produces more torque for power input provided to it.

Either motor will produce the same amount of power when geared to proper belt speed, there is not power advantage one over the other. At 1725RPM the motor will have twice the torque on the shaft as a 3450RPM motor, but if geared to the same speed, they will have the same torque.

I recommend a 1725RPM motor because they are quieter and last longer in terms of bearing wear.
