Grinder, what do you think about this???

You got me! I am not sure what files are good???
A large collection of my stuff is Harbor Frieght. I would like to get some quality hand tools I just really don't know what to get at this time.

Any help is appreciated.

files Harbor Frieght.

Theres the problem, Get Nicholsom files, Simonds are good also. Nicholson files are U.S.A. made. They will last a long time. Read the tutorials about draw filing under "newbies look here"

Even after you get the best grinder you can you will still need to know how to use files. Harbor freight tools have there place but not for cutting tools. Files, Hacksaw blades, band saw blades get the best and you'll save money and frustration.

I bought a similar grinder from Grizzly (mine has the 6 inch wheel) about 15 months ago, then in June of 07 (about 5 or so months later) I bought a Coote. The platen was worthless, I was able to work on handles but nothing else, and the belts are none existent. The best advice I received back then was, save up and buy a solid 2*72, I know, I thought the same thing, not going to happen. Do your best, it will mean all the difference in the quality of your knives, really!

Maybe try making your own. I am considering it, for a second 2*72, to speed up the process.

Which Nicholson files do you recomend?
A 14" Flat Bastard (sounds funny almost like Fat Bastard) Mill(have no idea what the "Mill" means)?
Or just a regular Nicholson Bastard file???

Thanks,
Stefan

Well I went to the Centaur Forge website and bought a file, a hammer (heavy) and some borax.
I ordered some P50 quench from Ellis for the W2 I have on its way!

I really appreciate any and all advice you guys give!!!!

Thanks,
Stefan

I'm just dreading the idea of filing away on W2!!! The railroad spike was not the most funnest thing to file on and I doubt W2 will be any more entertaining.

I'm just really not sure what route to take. Do you think I could get away with filing on W2??
I'll try it out and see how it goes!
Any advice?

Thanks,
I did buy some decent files as well. It is a learning experience figuring out how to work with steel in such a way to get a knife when all is done. Still not sure about my 4X36. Did spend a couple of hours on it today. Regarding files, caught something in another thread about chalk. Good thing for files.

WOW, did some draw filing and it works soooooooo much better then what I was doing and it evens things out.

Thanks!

If I had to do it all over again, I'd have started on a 12" disc grinder, and ground all my blades using files in conjunction with the disc grinder until I could afford a KMG. Youll always need that disc grinder! I havent touched my 1X30 or 2X42 since the KMG arrived, but keep them in case I ever want to convert them to dedicated tasks.
