I am looking at making a 2"x72" grinder and have a few questions that I have not been able to find.

First, what is the difference of the between the Idler and Tention wheels. Can one be used as the other?

Second, what is the Contact wheel for? Could I use Idler wheels for this purpose?

Last, for the Platen, Is Contact wheels better for this or are Idler wheels?

I have been researching this for a while and have not been able to find these answers. Any help, links, etc. would be helpful.

Thanks

Well mate I'm no expert but the one I built works pretty good.
The idler wheels are just aluminium wheels for the belt to roll along at either end of a platen or other attachment, not much good for grinding against.
The tension wheel is a aluminium wheel that has a slight crown or radius that when pivoted on its mount allows the belt to move or track side to side.So an idler wheel with its flat face will not work for this application as the belt will not be able to move freely side to side.
The contact wheel is a rubber coated which provides a stiff but slightly forgiving surface to grind against reducing chatter and allowing for smooth grinds.
I use contact wheels of different sizes on my platen so they can also be used for grinding radius of different sizes.
For more info have a look at the site where lots of no weld grinder parts are sold and the associated forum there, lots of build pics and info. But I'm sure if you stick around someone more knowledgable than myself will chime in and help out as well.
My advice is keep doing your research and even try and get a look first hand at a NWG that someone else has built,it hepled me heaps.
