grinder wheels question

I'm starting to collect parts to make my grinder and I was wondering if skateboard bearings would hold up to the speed and pressure of a grinder..what do you think? i was thinking of using skate wheels for the idler and 2 for the flat platen.

I read abec7 can handle 34000 rpm but I dont know if that has any load on it. what kind of rpms do you think a grinder puts on a 2' wheel(i cant do the math)

Should be 6-7000 rpm, unless the belt is going at warp speed. A 3500 sfpm belt speed will turn a 2" idler at ~6700 rpm. A larger the wheel diameter would mean fewer revolutions and longer lasting bearings, however, many platen idlers are around that size or smaller, as are small diameter contact wheels.

beochie,

Where did you find wheels 2" wide for skateboards? I often thought about it but my search never turned up anything useful. Any input would be helpful.

Somebody recently mentioned 'longboard' wheels. I'm not sure what a longboard is exactly, (I think I know) but apparently the wheels are 2" wide.

Beochie,

Just a question, is the first number in the description the width or the diameter of the wheel? I have no idea.

The first number is the height of the wheel, the second is the width. 69, not all longboard wheels are the same width, you want them about 50-55 mm wide. Skateboard wheels work great as idlers, plus they look cool. And they are relatively cheap.

60 mph is not an uncommon speed for serious downhill racing on a longboard. With a 70mm wheel, this yields roughly 5180 rpm. Now consider a 180 lb. man riding a board. That's 45 lbs. per wheel. Except instead of nice, smooth running on your grinder, they encounter heavy side loads, terrible abrasion sliding around corners, major weight shifting, and shock from every little pebble in that road. Not to mention the heat buildup from constantly changing shape at that speed with those loads. And that's expected of them. Grinding is a cakewalk for this type of wheel. The bearings are more what you need to worry about, just don't get the absolute cheapest and you will be fine, as they are perfectly capable of all this abuse and more.

got my wheels yesterday! A couple things about them:

1. they are a lot softer than I thought they would be I got the blue ones(hardest ones)you can flex the edges

2.they have a big concave to them but on each side the concave is not equal...so one side flexes a little easier than the other.

3. I went to the hardware store and the bolts I found that fit the bearings they leave a little play(I think they are 5/16 bolts) I can see how this wouldn't be good in a grinder. can anyone think of a way to get them just a tad snugger? I was thinking of going back and trying galvanized or grade 8.

other than that the spin really well and have no noticeable wobble or bumps.
I'll keep you guys updated

The bearing world is primarily metric, and the inner diameter of that skate bearing is most likely metric. If you can find a metric bolt, it might make things easier for you to get a close fit.

If you have access to a lathe, turning down the a slightly larger standard bolt could work as well.

pallet trolly wheels are the same as scate board wheels but slightly larger and harder.
thats what im using.

My grinders thread
I am using polyurethane palete transporter wheels. I did post the pics on my previous grinder thread, but I guess you didn't saw them.

You can add and relpace whatever bearings you want on those rollers. on the forks are about 2 and a half inches wide.

yes, thats the same type as i used.they where cheaper than buying the bearings individually! they are holding up very well.

Where did you purchase them at???????????? I tried to find them and all I could find was the dolleys but I don't need a pallet dolley. Someone must sell the replacement wheels! Got a link?

I couldnt find just wheels were did you get them?....I bout my steel today. its goning to be altra beefy

knifemaniac, where did you and caseynz get these wheels from??????? The only site I have been able to turn up is a UK site. There must be a site in America that sells a replacement wheel for a polyurethane palete transporter wheels.. If you would not mind how about posting the site for purchasing these wheels! :)
