I'm new to knife making and I am looking for a decent grinder without breaking the bank. A friend has Grizzly grinder, and I was wonder if anyone has any input on it.
thanks

I use a Craftsman 2X42 since I started in this hobby about a year ago. Less than $150 and will do an adequate job of flat grinding and profiling. It is not a top shelf rig, but one that many here stared out on and one that is used by quite a few hobbiest makers.

I just checked online and it is on sale for $129, search the craftsman site under belt sanders.

A lot of folks like the grizzly a lot. Many people change out the wheel to a 10" for the extra $75 or so. The complaint from some is that you hit the motor on the 8" wheel. I've heard of a few folks having the switch go bad on their motor as well. These aren't big ticket problems for the price.

Another grinder in that price range is the Coote grinder. You have to get your own motor, but it's a very well built machine.

I'm pretty much ion the same boat. Can you remove the platen on the Craftsman as you can on the Delta 1x42? I'm trying to make a decision in the next week.
