If you want a good "starter grinder" try the Grizzly 2" X 72", That's what I am currently using. When I bought mine 2 yrs ago I think I paid around $395.00. Nice 1 hp motor and you can purchase a 10" contact wheel for it as well.

A Delta S-108 grinder (1 x 42) is a good, small, reliable grinder. They retail for about $135, you can get them at discount around $100-$120.

Sears has the Craftsman 2x42 for about $139. It's got its limitations, but beats the heck out of files and sandpaper.

Ditto...I think I paid a bit less on sale about a year ago. It's full of compromises and frustrating design limitations, but if it's all you can afford or justify spending now it will make a good knife and is much better (faster?) than files. I'm very close to upgrading to something better.

Since I can't really do any forging during the week, I do believe I may start building a grinder this week. I can assure you that it will be CHEAP I'll be sure to take plenty of pics.
