can i just use a belt sander to do my grinds? sorry for all my questions, im not a paying member so i cant use the search function. thanks

you can, thats how i started 15 years ago. i got ahold of my fathers belt sander and made some knives. lets just say the belt sander did not last long. grinding dust will eat up the sander.
 
JT's right about the dust eating up your sander i've had it happen to me a couple of times. but it you buy a belt sander with a good vaccume attachment you can stop the dust from screwing it up. also if you fix the sander to a table or vice pointing up like a bench sander you can use a shopvac near the belt to catch most of it. thats what i do and seems to work well as i haven't had to replace mine in about 2 yrs. hope this helps,
