Grinders ??????

Lot of good ones just make sure which ever you choose it has variable speed. Bit more pricey but worth every penny.

A budget will help with any recommendations, as the price range of today's available machines is quite expansive. You could spend anywhere from $20 for a cheap 1x30, up to about $5k for the latest and greatest 2x72, though there's several very nice options in the ~$1500 to $2500 range. and even a few decent options in the sub $1500 range.

A VFD (variable speed) package definitely adds an extra dimension of usefulness to the machine, and even in that realm you have a variety of options, from cheapest to most expensive.

Let us know what you're able and willing to spend, and we'll drill down into some options for you.

I put my Oregon Blade Maker grinder together with a 2hp motor and a VFD for around $750. Best I could do on a variable speed 2x72

I have been inspired to build a 2x72 for myself after seeing what can be put together on these pages. I feel my little 3x36 has done well enough for the a number of personal knives over the last 25years or so but lately the desire to do a little more has bitten.
I have an old bench saw that I had adapted for a sander and can use that as the base for the grinder

I would recommend taking a look at the AMK grinder http://amktactical.com/epages/3c926...26a50-9aba-43a5-9571-098ee03f1288/Products/33 , it has all the stuff that much more expensive grinders have, and it has a nice all inclusive design, where there is a contact wheel and a flat platen on a rotating arm so you don't have to remove one or the other, you just spin the arm around. This one gets you going at a pretty high level right from jump street. If you're going for a step up, I like the North Ridge tools grinder, it was my second one and it is really nice, although you do have the separate tool arms for every fixture thing with it like many others.

Check out Jose at Pheer -- http://www.2x72beltgrinder.com/
Love mine. Depends on budget and what power supply you've got in your shop. I got a great deal on a 2HP Baldor motor on eBay, Jose hooked me up with the grinder frame. Minimal build time and I was up and running.

I went through the process of buying a 2x72 grinder a while back and posted the entire debate here. The choices for me came down to a Pheer, AMK, Northridge, or Esteem. I ultimately decided to purchase an Esteem grinder from Brett Mathews. The first link is a rather exhaustive debate on the pros and cons of each grinder and the second link includes the build pictures of the Esteem. It came in about 5 boxes in order to cut down on shipping costs and took only a couple hours to have up and running.

The Debate

The Build

I bought the Esteem grinder. Brett Mathews is a very nice guy and when I boiled it all down it was not a lot more than all the pieces parts. I do not have access to a lot of steel and or other pieces that would have made it easier and cheaper to build. I have used the Esteem for over a year now and have really come to like it.
