What is the best way to go about grinding a Karambit or hook style blade. I've looked around and haven't been able to locate much on the subject. Is it better to grind slack belt, platen or wheel and any tricks or other suggestions are appreciated.

Not Karambits but hawksbills I have done.I have built up a layer with regular masking tape of about 3/16" X 1" wide in the center of my wheel and of course used 1" belts. I believe there is one to see on the customknifegallery of Colorado.

So you are basically making your grinding surface convex if I'm understanding you correctly.

After grinding a bunch of them I can tell you it is a headache that gets easier to manage but never fully goes away. You have options. You can flat grind on the corners of your platen and then chase it with a wheel to clean it up and get a good hollow grind. You can also grind them by grinding perpendicular on a wheel for a flatish grind. I find this the easiest to execute. I also find it easier to grind edge down on most of them so there's that. If that doesn't work for you follow kdogmcg's advice. Best of luck to you.
