I just bought a Craftsman 2x42 belt sander based on advice that everyone posted here. I'm planning on making my first knife soon (A fixed blade utility/hunter from 1084) and I could really use some advice on what grit size belts I'm going to need, how many of each, where to get them. Also, is there something I can spray on the belts to get more life from them? I'm going to get a ceramic platen liner soon.

How thick is you 1084, if it 1/8" Iwould use a 60 or 80 grit to start, switch to a 120 grit then to a 240 grit and then a 400 or 600 grit. Tru-grit has a lot of belts for the 2 X42 thart where I got mine when I had the sears grinder,Still like tru-grit for my 2 X 72.
After have run the sears grinder for about 2 years my best advice is get the ceramic liner as soon as possible,it will make a huge differance.
